Flipkart, the Walmart-owned e-commerce platform, is expected to start the service around August 15 in Bengaluru. Current reports pointed out that the app has already started onboarding restaurants across the city. The most interesting part includes its 10% commission rate, which is significantly lower than that of other existing food delivery platforms, around 16 to 30%.

This service will be Flipkart’s entry to a platform that has been dominated by Zomato and Swiggy for a long time. Reports also suggest that Flipkart is taking a different route from other food-delivery platforms and is looking at ONDC as part of its long-term plan to grow its food delivery business.

Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has confirmed that the rollout will be through multiple phases, mentioning that Flipkart would first test the product with a limited set of users and collect their feedback. After that, they will refine the service accordingly before scaling it.

Flipkart already has a large customer base and one of the country's biggest delivery networks. Backing from Walmart also gives it the money to expand quickly. These strengths could help the company gain attention soon after launch.

Food delivery, though, is a tough business; low prices are not everything. Fast and reliable delivery partners, as well as good customer service, are also important. Zomato and Swiggy spent years creating those networks. If Flipkart wants to be a serious player, it’ll have to match that experience.

Flipkart’s entry could inject fresh competition in India’s food delivery market. If it delivers good service and lower costs, it could be another strong option for both restaurants and customers.
