Square Enix has officially announced Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. At Summer Game Fest 2026, multiple games attracted attention, but Square Enix surprised fans with a game that wasn’t even rumored earlier. This upcoming entry will serve as the final chapter of the remake trilogy that started with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020 and continued with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024.

The announcement has quickly become one of the biggest gaming stories of the week. Fans have been waiting to learn how the trilogy will end, especially after the many twists introduced in the first two games. With Revelation, Square Enix seems to be ready to provide some answers.

Summer Game Fest Trailer Reveals New Story Details

The Final Fantasy 7 Revelation trailer has shown that the story will mostly revolve around Cloud and his companions as they continue their journey across the planet. Familiar faces such as Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and Sephiroth all appeared during the reveal. The gameplay teased some story moments, large-scale battles, and scenes that hinted at major events still to come. As usual, Sephiroth will be the center of the conflict.

In one of his interviews with GamesRadar+, the game’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, confirmed that players will have some freedom in how they experience the game as the studio doesn’t want “to just kind of deliver a singular storytelling experience for every single player around the world.” The goal is to make everyone’s experience different from others’.

However, Hamaguchi has also confirmed, “There won't be multiple endings that would change depending on the players' choices.” When players make different choices, they will alter the paths to reaching the climax. The ending will be the same no matter how one progresses.

The confirmed release date hasn’t been revealed yet, but the game is expected to launch in Spring 2027 on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Why ‘Revelation’ Could Answer Long-Standing Questions

The remake trilogy has introduced several mysteries that were not part of the original game. Players have seen strange timeline changes, unexpected events, and moments that seem to challenge the story fans already know. Sephiroth appears to know more than he should, while Aerith often seems aware of things before they happen.

Those questions became even bigger after the ending of Rebirth. Fans have spent the last two years discussing theories and trying to understand what is really happening. For many players, those answers are now the most important part of the final game. Revelation seems to convey some of the answers through its storyline.

Could the Final Chapter Move Further Away From the Original?

One thing has become clear throughout the remake trilogy: Square Enix is not simply retelling the 1997 story. Some events have changed. Some scenes have been expanded. Other moments have played out differently from what longtime fans expected.

Many players believe Revelation could introduce even bigger changes before the story ends.  Whether the ending stays close to the original game or takes a completely new direction remains one of the biggest questions surrounding Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
