Elon Musk revealed that Grok, the chatbot created by xAI, will shortly be equipped with a feature to scan videos for signs of AI-generated content. According to Musk, the new feature will also enable Grok to track the source of a particular video.
This will enable it to determine whether a piece of content is original or artificially created. This may be the ideal solution to address the growing concern about the misuse of AI-generated content. This includes deepfakes for impersonation, defamation, and disinformation.
Musk was speaking after a tweet on X by right-wing commentator Matt Walsh, warning about the simplicity of producing highly realistic deepfake videos.
Walsh described that “in the next year or two, most likely sooner, anybody who dislikes you will be able to create any type of defamatory video,” saying that they will be “indistinguishable from reality” and hard to refute.
Responding to this, Musk stated, “@grok will be able to scan the video for AI signatures in the bitstream and then do more research on the Internet to determine origin.”
After Musk’s comment, Grok AI revealed further details on how the detection tool might function. Using the assistant, Grok can identify slight markers of synthetic generation within the digital makeup of a video that may go unnoticed by humans.
Additionally, the system will be able to perform metadata analysis and verify online records simultaneously, providing a more detailed picture of the video’s authenticity. The use of these tools is a significant measure in combating the spread of deepfakes and other forms of AI-related misinformation on the web.

Since its establishment in 2023, Grok has been a core component of Musk’s vision to maximize the application of AI at X and make xAI a competitor to OpenAI and Google. In the early part of this year, Musk integrated xAI into X to enhance the integration between the two platforms, allowing the chatbot to serve as both a conversational tool and a fact-checking assistant for users.
Musk has also suggested bigger plans for Grok, including becoming X’s replacement recommendation algorithm for providing more personalized content and creating ‘Grokipedia,’ a crowdsourced knowledge base intended to compete with Wikipedia.
More recently, Musk introduced an upgraded version of Grok’s video creation tool, which is now accessible to both free and paid users. The inclusion of AI detection features would represent another move by Musk to make X a more AI-centric platform, and possibly, a frontline in the battle against synthetic media.
