OpenAI recently announced that ChatGPT Search is now free to all. Until November 2024, this service was available only to paid subscribers. Anyone can now use the Search option by signing up for a ChatGPT account.
The feature allows users to set ChatGPT Search as their default search engine, providing an AI-driven alternative to traditional search engines. Thus, it is poised to give tough competition to its biggest rival, Google Search.
The features will be available to all ChatGPT users worldwide. However, due to regional restrictions, users in certain EU countries may not be able to enjoy the full functionality of advanced voice mode. OpenAI plans to deploy the voice and screen-sharing functionalities for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu subscribers in January 2025.
OpenAI also optimized its search for mobile use. This improvement promises a seamless and more efficient search experience for smartphone and tablet users.
Moreover, the company has integrated an advanced voice search mode. In this mode, the user can ask questions and receive swift responses through voice commands, providing a more convenient and hands-free search experience.
Using advanced natural language processing tools, the new ChatGPT Search produces more accurate and relevant answers, making it a hot contender against Google regarding search engines. Unlike traditional link-based search engines, users will get far more personalized and contextually relevant answers.
In another significant update, OpenAI brings real-time video and screen-sharing capabilities into Advanced Voice Mode. This will enable users to share the content of their screens with ChatGPT, for which feedback can be solicited. For example, users can share their screens to solve tricky mathematical equations. This feature will soon be available to iOS and Android users with ChatGPT Teams, Plus, or Pro accounts.
It remains to be seen whether ChatGPT Search will completely replace Google Search or will just end up as a second alternative to the staple search engine.
