OpenAI has introduced Images 2.6, an update to its image-generation technology that brings GIF creation, faster output and more precise editing to ChatGPT, Codex and its developer API. According to the company, it generates images up to 50% faster than its predecessor. OpenAI also reported that users now create more than four billion images each week across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, highlighting the growing use of AI-generated visuals.
One major addition is native GIF generation. Users can turn text prompts, sketches or existing images into short animations without assembling frames in a separate tool. The feature supports creative tasks such as animated brand mascots, product loops, social media reactions and storyboards. Users can adjust playback speed, edit individual frames and share their creations.
This gives creators another way to add movement to visual content, while making animation more accessible to people without specialist editing skills.

OpenAI is offering two API models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst. Flare is designed for speed and improved layouts in posters and product images. At low quality settings, it can generate an image in as little as six seconds.
Sunburst focuses on higher-quality results, with greater detail and consistency across editing rounds. This could help projects where characters, products or brand elements need to retain the same appearance.

The update brings image markup to the API, allowing developers to identify areas to change. SVG export support makes visuals easier to use across websites, apps and print projects. A new complexity setting controls how much planning the model applies, while a separate quality option adjusts visual detail. OpenAI recommends lower complexity for routine edits and higher settings for images with multiple elements.
Images 2.6 is rolling out globally in ChatGPT and Codex across web, desktop and mobile. Developers can access Flare and Sunburst through the API.
