OpenAI is removing the text chat limit for ChatGPT Free users, allowing them to continue text-based conversations without hitting a message cap. The company is also introducing GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model for Free and Go users, along with a new Think button for questions that need deeper reasoning.
The changes are part of a wider update covering ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, with different features available to users based on their subscription.
The biggest change is coming to ChatGPT Free users. OpenAI said text conversations will no longer be limited, allowing users to use ChatGPT throughout the day without being interrupted by a message limit.
The same benefit will be extended to Go users. However, the change applies only to text chats. File uploads, image uploads, voice conversations and AI image generation will continue to have separate usage limits.
The update is particularly relevant for users who use ChatGPT for writing, asking questions, brainstorming or learning, as they will be able to continue text conversations without a message limit.
Free and Go users will also get GPT-5.6 Luna as the default AI model. OpenAI has upgraded its GPT-5.5 model to GPT-5.6 Luna, meaning users will not need to manually switch models for regular conversations after the rollout.
The company claims GPT-5.6 Luna provides more consistent results while maintaining a natural and fast conversational experience. It is also designed to handle routine tasks, including answering straightforward questions, explaining concepts and helping with writing.
According to OpenAI's internal evaluation, GPT-5.6 Luna makes 62% fewer factual mistakes than GPT-5.5 Instant.
OpenAI is adding a Think button to ChatGPT Free and Go. The feature is aimed at questions that require more reasoning than a typical conversation.
When users select Think, ChatGPT takes more time to work through the problem before providing an answer. It can be used for multi-step problems, complex concepts, and questions that require detailed analysis.
Users can select Think whenever they want ChatGPT to spend more time reasoning before responding.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers are getting an upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol. OpenAI says the model performs better for daily productivity tasks, including answering questions, conducting web research, making project plans, writing content, providing advice and making decisions.
The updated model is also intended to produce more concise and unambiguous responses without reducing accuracy. OpenAI clarified that the change applies to GPT-5.6 Sol and does not affect Codex and Work.
Plus and Pro users will also receive a thinking slider. It allows them to control the level of reasoning ChatGPT uses before responding. Users can keep the reasoning level lower for simple questions or increase it for more complex requests.
