Centre Greenlights Mega Semiconductor Plant Near Jewar, Uttar Pradesh

HCL-Foxconn’s Semiconductor Venture Gets Govt Approval for Jewar Site

Written By : Anudeep Mahavadi

The government of India has approved a ₹3,706 crore semiconductor production unit in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This is a large boost to the country's electronics industry and the steps it needs to take to advance further. It is a collaborative project between Taiwan's Foxconn and HCL Group, seeking to strengthen India's position among the world's semiconductor players.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

The new plant will be located on a 48-acre plot of land in Sector 28 of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area. The plant is closest to the upcoming Noida International Airport. The site has strategic benefits with its accessibility to major transport links and industrial base. A medical device park and toy clusters have already been established.

Production Capacity and Employment

The plant will produce 36 million display driver chips each year to power devices such as smartphones, laptops, cars, and medical devices. The plant will also be able to process 20,000 semiconductor wafers per month. The full project will create approximately 2,000 direct jobs to enhance the economic development in the region.

Alignment to National Initiatives

The project is the sixth to have been approved under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), a ₹76,000 crore mission with the aim to reduce the nation's dependence on semiconductor imports and build domestic manufacturing capabilities. The HCL-Foxconn complex is the state's first semiconductor factory, underscoring Uttar Pradesh's increased profile in India's high-technology manufacturing sector.

Government Support and Vision

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, noted the project's importance for upgrading India's semiconductor manufacturing setup. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the move as it echoes Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) vision. It mirrors the enthusiasm of the state government to realize the vision for converting Uttar Pradesh into a state of high-value electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.

Looking Forward

The establishment of the HCL-Foxconn semiconductor plant at Jewar is a strategic move to move India ahead in the world semiconductor industry. By focusing on the production of display driver chips, the factory aims at a critical component in the electronics supply chain. The project, which is to be located near the large infrastructure, is aligned with national schemes like the ISM and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. This highlights its ability to be a regional economic development and technological advancement driver.
