AI already has a huge impact on entry-level jobs. Since January 2023, job postings for entry-level roles have been down 35%, especially in finance and consulting roles. Other tasks, such as research, data analysis, and content creation, which were previously completed by junior employees, are now automated. Even small businesses are hiring fewer entry-level employees.
By 2030, experts predict that automation could eliminate 30% of work hours in the U.S., affecting younger workers. Employers now prefer junior employees who can manage AI systems, rather than those learning entry-level tasks.
As a result, many Gen Z job seekers are shifting towards careers that are less susceptible to AI. More are considering skilled trades such as plumbing, electrical, or elevator installation that provide stability and don’t require a university degree. The fact that these jobs are also unlikely to be automated in the coming years adds to the appeal.
Also, many are looking to pursue careers in vocational or social service careers that involve human-to-human interaction and are less likely to be automated, such as healthcare, education, and social work. According to a recent survey of Gen Z respondents, 53% stated they were considering careers in skilled labor or social services, rather than in substantive corporate jobs.
Gates encourages youth to keep up with AI developments, but he notes that simply using AI tools doesn't lead to success. Gates argues in favor of technical fluency along with emotional intelligence and flexibility. Employers are looking for creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking that AI cannot provide.
