One of the main features will be OwlOS, ARC’s custom Android-based operating system. It is designed particularly for handheld gaming and controller use. ARC also plans to make changes at the system level to improve gaming performance and power use. The goal is to offer a portable device that can balance performance, battery life, and ease of use. The final processor and other key specifications are still unknown.
The Steam Deck is built for PC gaming and runs SteamOS. Its biggest strength is access to a large Steam game library. It also offers a console-like way to play PC games while traveling.
The ARC X1 is taking another path. It will use Android and OwlOS, which could give it access to Android games and other supported titles. Its smaller and lighter design could also make portability a key selling point.
However, the two devices have different goals. Steam Deck focuses on bringing PC games to a handheld. ARC appears more focused on creating a flexible Android gaming device. It is too early to say which will perform better.
The ARC X1 looks interesting, but several details are still missing. Its processor, display, battery, price, and game support will matter most. Until ARC reveals those details, the X1 should not be called a Steam Deck replacement.
