September has virtually been synonymous with iPhone as every year, Apple religiously launches its new smartphone this month, nudging out the previous versions. However, this annual trend is now on the verge of a change, with reports of Apple planning a massive transformation in its smartphone launch calendar.
If these changes are true, Apple may not be releasing the standard version of iPhone 18 in 2026. Instead, customers will have to wait until 2027 to purchase the regular iPhone.
This could be the first time Apple is shaking up a segment that is all about predictability and based on an annual increment.
The shift is likely related to the increasing complexity of iPhones. Instead of unveiling all models at the same time in the fall, Apple may distribute the product launch throughout the year. The flagship models would still be introduced in the second half of the year, while others would appear in the spring.

According to current reports, Apple plans to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max towards the end of 2026, along with its first foldable iPhone. The company also hinted at a possible delay in the iPhone 18 launch. It could wait till the spring of 2027, with variants like iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 coming up.
Some analysts attribute the staggered lineup to the ‘expanding product portfolio’ of Apple. The firm is expected to retail a lineup of up to eight iPhone models towards the end of 2026, including iPhone 16e, iPhone Air, vintage options such as iPhone 16, as well as the expected foldable model.
A staggered product launch may provide breathing space for each product and allow Apple to evenly distribute its success with its products across the whole year.
