Apple is reportedly preparing one of the biggest redesigns of the MacBook Pro lineup in years. The upcoming models are expected to combine an OLED display and touchscreen support with a thinner and significantly lighter chassis.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has now revealed that Apple has reworked the laptop’s internal architecture to reduce its weight. The company has reportedly miniaturised several components and rearranged them inside the machine. Gurman says the result should make the new MacBook Pro considerably easier to carry.

MacBook Pro Could Get a Major Weight Reduction

The weight reduction could address one of the biggest drawbacks of Apple’s larger professional laptops. The current 16-inch MacBook Pro can weigh up to around 4.8 pounds, or roughly 2.18 kg. By comparison, the 15-inch MacBook Air weighs about 3.3 pounds, or 1.5 kg.

Gurman did not provide an exact weight for the redesigned MacBook Pro. However, his description of the device as ‘significantly lighter' suggests that Apple is targeting a noticeable reduction rather than a minor change.

Weight reduction is only one part of Apple’s reported redesign. The next-generation MacBook Pro is expected to become the first MacBook with a touchscreen and an OLED display.

OLED and Touchscreen Expected

The OLED panel should deliver higher contrast and deeper blacks compared with the current display technology. Touch support would also mark a major shift in Apple’s long-standing approach to Mac hardware.

The redesign may also change the display's appearance. Earlier reports suggested that Apple could replace the existing notch with a hole-punch camera cutout and introduce a Dynamic Island-style interface.

Apple could unveil the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models as early as October, with November also considered possible. Gurman has said the machines are currently being tested with macOS 27.2.
