Anthropic has struck a USD 3.4 billion deal to secure gas-fired power generators for its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure, marking a major move into the energy sector. The agreement, finalized in late September, covers 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators originally ordered by OnePWR Solutions, a San Antonio, Texas-based equipment supplier.
The deal highlights how leading AI companies are increasingly securing their own electricity infrastructure as demand for data center capacity grows and equipment shortages push manufacturing timelines further out. Anthropic is purchasing commitments for Caterpillar generators rather than acquiring OnePWR itself.
Under the agreement, Anthropic secured access to generator orders OnePWR placed with Caterpillar about two years ago. The transaction also includes engineering and construction capabilities required to install the equipment.
However, Anthropic has not acquired OnePWR, and none of the supplier’s employees have transferred to the AI company, according to a person familiar with the matter. Both companies declined to comment on the transaction.
The purchase is the largest known single acquisition of power-generation equipment by an AI laboratory. Anthropic had initially planned to become a customer of OnePWR but subsequently chose to take over its existing equipment orders.
The arrangement gives Anthropic access to generators available in the near term and over the next two years, helping it avoid delays associated with new manufacturing orders.
The agreement reflects a broader shift among technology companies towards securing electricity directly instead of depending entirely on utilities and specialist power suppliers.
Demand for gas turbines and generators has increased sharply as AI developers race to build data centers capable of handling increasingly demanding workloads.
SpaceX has also pursued direct access to power-generation equipment. Its AI subsidiary, xAI, purchased mobile gas turbines earlier this year for USD 2 billion. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, acquired energy developer Intersect in late 2025.
Anthropic is also a major SpaceX customer, with its monthly payments for leased computing capacity expected to reach USD 3.1 billion by the end of 2026.

The generator purchase comes as Anthropic expands its infrastructure investments. The company has disclosed nearly USD 900 billion in computing commitments through 2045, with spending expected to exceed USD 895 billion.
The company is preparing for a possible public listing as early as November 2026. However, its ambitious expansion plans face financial challenges. Blackstone has warned that Anthropic could receive a junk credit rating instead of the investment-grade rating previously anticipated.
