Anthropic is facing a new lawsuit alleging it misrepresented the nature of its most expensive subscription plan, Claude Max. Some users claim that Anthropic misled them into believing they would have more access to and use of the service than advertised.

The proposed lawsuit has been filed in a federal court in California. Thus, highlighting the issue of transparency in the booming market of artificial intelligence subscriptions.

Anthropic Sued Over Claude Max Marketing Claims

As per reports, Washington, D.C. resident Karl Kahn alleged in the lawsuit that Anthropic promised more access than customers actually receive under its Claude Max plans.  The real usage limits for the Max 5x and Max 20x subscriptions are difficult to understand and appear to be lower than what Anthropic advertises.

The Anthropic Claude Max subscription comes in two different packages, costing $100 and $200 per month. The two subscription plans are marketed as offering five and twenty times the usage of the normal Pro plan.

The lawsuit alleged that certain misleading marketing terms gave users false expectations about the service. Users faced limitations in fully using Claude.

Growing Pressure on AI Subscription Models

The complaint claims that Anthropic did not provide sufficient information about the extent of these limitations before selling the plans. Hence, consumers might have ended up paying higher prices while being unaware of the limitations that come along with using the service.

In its lawsuit, the plaintiff wants to file a class action against customers who have purchased Claude Max subscriptions since April 2025. Additionally, it is seeking compensation from Anthropic in favor of the users. As of now, Anthropic has not commented on these allegations. The allegations have not been proven in court, and no class has been certified at this stage.

This case arises at a time when AI companies are increasingly dependent on subscription models. Given the reliance on AI, users expect greater transparency about limitations, costs, and service access.
