Amazon-owned Ring has entered the smart lock market with a USD 249 device designed to solve one of the biggest concerns with keyless entry: what happens when the battery dies. Announced on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), the Ring Smart Lock features a built-in power dial that users can turn by hand to temporarily restore enough power to unlock the door. The device is expected to launch in the US in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approval.
The move expands Ring’s home-security lineup beyond its established range of video doorbells and cameras. According to the company, the lock is designed to work with existing Ring and Amazon products while eliminating the need for a traditional key or an external battery in an emergency.
The most unusual feature is the Power Dial positioned below the lock’s keypad. If the main battery runs out, turning the dial several times generates enough electricity to temporarily power the lock. That gives users enough time to enter a code or use another unlocking method and get inside.
According to Ring, the main battery pack should last about a year under normal use and can be monitored through the Ring app. Unlike some competing smart locks that rely on a hidden physical key, a USB cable or an external battery for emergencies, Ring has built the backup mechanism directly into the lock.
The device offers four entry options: a fingerprint reader, backlit touchscreen keypad, Ring app and Amazon Alexa. Users can also create temporary or scheduled access for people such as family members, dog walkers or house cleaners.
The lock is designed to fit a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and does not require additional wiring. It connects through Amazon Sidewalk, allowing functions such as remote locking, status updates and PIN synchronization without depending on a home's Wi-Fi connection. Ring says unlocking takes place locally on the device.

The Ring Smart Lock will initially be available in the US in black, silver and brass for USD 249. Amazon has not announced an international launch. The company also says the device has not yet received the required FCC authorization and cannot be sold until that approval is obtained.
Ring is also expanding its camera lineup with new 4K models, including the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, Spotlight Cam 4K Plus and Floodlight Cam 4K Plus. The smart lock itself does not include a camera, but it can work alongside Ring’s existing security products through the Ring app.
