Artificial intelligence could change the US economy by 2030. One model from Anthropic suggests that US economic output could reach USD 44 trillion. This is much higher than the current level of just over USD 30 trillion.
Speaking at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok on October 17, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said AI is improving fast and could help businesses get more work done. He also said it could lead to new inventions and industries. However, the USD 44 trillion figure is only one possible outcome, not a sure forecast.
Clark said AI is already helping speed up scientific work. As more companies use it, they could save time, cut costs, and create new products. He mentioned, “The technology continuing to get better. And if GDP were to grow this much, then economic doctrine suggests that new industries and inventions would need to have been created to power such a major economic expansion.”
However, not everyone may gain from this change. Some jobs, including customer service roles, could come under pressure as firms use AI to handle more tasks. Clark also stressed the need for countries to work together on rules that help manage AI risks.
Smaller firms may struggle if they cannot afford these tools. Workers whose tasks can be done by AI may also need to learn new skills. Training and access to useful tools will matter if the gains are to reach more people.
AI needs more than good software. It also needs data centers, advanced chips, steady electricity, and enough computing power. Without these, many countries and small firms may find it hard to use AI widely.
Clark said more countries could join the AI shift by helping build computing capacity. This could create local jobs and give businesses better access to AI services. However, data centers require time and money to build. They also need large amounts of power and a steady supply of chips.
