AI Assists Surgeons in Complex Brain Tumor Surgery

AI helped doctors plan and carry out a difficult brain tumor operation involving Rhys Hibbert. The technology provided surgeons with additional information as they worked around vital parts of the brain.

Rhys Hibbert became the first patient to have an AI assistant helping the doctors while he had brain tumor surgery. Doctors found a tumor close to parts of the brain linked to movement and speech, following his unconsciousness. The location of the tumor made the surgery especially difficult, as removing it could also damage healthy brain tissue. However, it was essential because Hibbert's tumor began to press on his optic nerves, narrowing his peripheral vision.

Doctors gave him the chance to become the first patient to have surgery using AI. The surgery involved inserting an endoscope via the nose to the base of the skull. There were complications. There was a 25–50% chance of not getting the whole tumor out and a 0.5–2% chance of injuring a major blood vessel. On another screen, AI was analyzing the live video feed, tracking the surgical instruments, and marking up areas where the vessels and nerves were most likely to be. It even highlighted the safest locations to operate on the tumor. 

According to Prof Hani Marcus, who carried out the procedure, “It is trained on more operations than most surgeons see or do in a lifetime and can act like an expert second pair of eyes.”

AI Assists, but Surgeons Stay in Charge

Hibbert’s case shows how AI could become a useful tool in difficult operations. The technology can study medical images and large amounts of data quickly. This can help doctors see important details and prepare for complex procedures.

However, AI does not make the final call. Surgeons still decide how the operation should move forward. They can compare the AI’s information with scans, their own experience, and what they see during the procedure.

This matters even more in brain surgery. No two patients are the same. A plan that works for one person may not suit another. Doctors must also be ready to change their approach if something unexpected happens.

Technology with a Human Safety Net

Hibbert’s surgery highlights the possible role of AI in modern healthcare. It can give surgeons another set of tools when they are dealing with some of the most difficult medical cases.

The key, however, is keeping people in control. AI can offer useful guidance, but careful checks and human judgment remain vital. As technology improves, its greatest value may come from helping surgeons make better decisions rather than replacing them.
