What’s New in Waymo’s System Safety Program? Let’s Find Out!

Written By : S Akash

To meet the complex demands of autonomous driving, Waymo has developed an array of sensors to see 360° degrees

Waymo, the driverless car company operating an autonomous taxi fleet in San Francisco, organizes various processes to keep the vehicles safe through its System Safety Program. It reduces the risk of potential hazards by developing safety requirements and testing to demonstrate that safety risks have been reduced to the levels identified in the analyses and addressed in the design. Its approach includes identifying hazard scenarios and potential mitigations that can be implemented to reduce risk. These mitigations may take various forms such as software or hardware requirements, hardware or software design recommendations, procedural controls, or recommendations for additional analyses. It uses various hazard identification methods such as customized software safety analysis, System-theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA). This continuous process goes hand-in-hand with ongoing engineering and test activities and safety engineering analyses.

However, regarding the safety protocols for Robotaxi, in January, Waymo, sued the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The Alphabet company filed a lawsuit against the DMV, it was an unidentified party that made public records request for its driverless technology that started it all.

The topics Waymo wants to keep hidden include how it plans to handle driverless car emergencies, what it would do if a robotaxi started driving itself where it wasn't supposed to go, and what constraints there are on the car's ability to traverse San Francisco's tunnels, tight curves, and steep hills. Waymo also wants to keep secret descriptions of crashes involving its driverless cars.

The California Superior Court in Sacramento has ruled in favor of Waymo, allowing the company to keep specific details about its autonomous vehicle technology a secret. Waymo won the case against the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
