Tesla’s Optimus Gen 2 Vs Gen 1 Robots: A Comparison

Written By : Swathi Kashettar

Here is a comparison of the two prototypes of Tesla's humanoid robot Optimus

Tesla, the electric car maker, has recently ventured into the field of humanoid robotics with its Optimus project. The company aims to create a general-purpose robot that can perform tasks that are dangerous, repetitive, or boring for humans. Tesla has unveiled two prototypes of Optimus in 2022 and 2023, which are referred to as Gen 1 and Gen 2 respectively. In this article, we will compare the two versions of Tesla's optimus Gen 1 robots and Tesla's optimus Gen 2 robots in terms of their appearance, size, weight, capabilities, and status.

  • Appearance: Gen 1 has a white and black color scheme, with a screen on its head that displays a face. Gen 2 has a sleeker and futuristic design, with a silver and blue color scheme, and a transparent visor on its head that shows its eyes. Gen 2 also has more visible joints and wires than Gen 1.
  • Size and weight: Gen 1 is 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) tall and weighs 125 lb (57 kg). Gen 2 is slightly taller and heavier, at 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) and 130 lb (59 kg).
  • Capabilities: Gen 1 can walk, wave, and dance on stage, but has limited mobility and dexterity. Gen 2 can move its arms, hands, and fingers more freely, and can also sort colored blocks, locate its limbs in space, and maintain a yoga pose. Both versions are controlled by the same AI system that Tesla uses for its cars, and have a carrying capacity of 45 lb (20 kg).
  • Status: Gen 1 is a proof-of-concept prototype that was first shown at Tesla's AI Day event in September 2022. Gen 2 is a semi-functional prototype that was displayed at Tesla's second AI Day event in September 2023. Tesla hopes to have a production-ready version of Optimus by 2024.

It's important to note that Gen 2 is still under development, and the final specifications and capabilities may differ from what has been announced so far. However, the improvements over Gen 1 are significant and represent a major step forward in humanoid robotics.
