NASSCOM data shows over 40% of tech roles in Indian GCCs face a skills gap. Niche candidates command salary premiums up to 1.7 times those of adjacent roles. Three shifts explain the surge. India now has 2,117 GCCs generating $98.4 billion in revenue in FY2026, with over 1,200 embedding AI and machine learning. They are shipping products and setting AI strategy for Fortune 500 companies, not processing transactions.

AI and ML Engineer

AI and ML engineers work on fine-tuning large language models, building pipelines for RAG systems, and managing MLOps infrastructure. Entry-level salaries typically range from Rs. 6 LPA to Rs. 14 LPA. 

The middle-level engineers working in product companies earn Rs. 25 to 50 LPA. ML engineering generalists typically earn 25–40% less than GenAI and LLM specialists at comparable experience levels.

Data Scientist and Data Engineer

Data scientists create predictive models and share insights with stakeholders. Data engineers build the pipelines that models depend on. Data engineers are among the highest-priority hires in 2026. BFSI GCCs alone report a 42% data skills gap, according to the India Decoding Jobs 2026 report. Data scientists' average salaries are between Rs. 10 to 25 LPA, while data engineers' salaries fall within the range of Rs. 12 and 25 LPA.

Cloud Architect and Cloud Engineer 

Cloud architects design infrastructure for cost, resilience, and scalability. Cloud engineers build and operate within that structure. Cloud architects with security expertise earn Rs. 22 to 50 LPA, with distinguished architects at top GCCs reaching Rs. 65 to 90 LPA. 

Mid-level cloud engineers earn Rs. 15 to 30 LPA. Professionals who can build cloud infrastructure for AI workloads command the highest premiums.

Cybersecurity Specialist and DevSecOps Engineer

Cybersecurity is India's fastest-growing technical speciality, by number of job postings, in 2026. Much of this hiring is driven by RBI regulations, SEBI compliance requirements, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. 

Professionals with an OSCP certification and four to five years of experience can earn Rs. 18–30 LPA. The salary range for DevSecOps engineers is Rs. 18 to 32 LPA, which is a 20-35% premium as compared to similar jobs in the SOC.

DevOps, SRE, and Platform Engineer 

DevOps engineers own the pipeline from code to production. SREs deal with reliability as an engineering problem. Platform engineers create internal tooling to boost productivity within whole organisations. The salary range for DevOps in India starts at around Rs. 9 LPA, with senior DevOps in product companies earning Rs. 20-35 LPA.

Full-Stack Developer

A full-stack developer is one of the top hiring roles in the Indian IT industry. Companies seek developers with React or Next.js, Node.js or Java with Spring Boot, along with Docker fundamentals and cloud experience. NASSCOM reports that 65% of Indian tech companies prioritise skills over formal qualifications. The salary offered in these positions varies from Rs. 5 to Rs 18 LPA, which can go up to Rs. 20 to 30 LPA in product companies.

Prompt Engineer and GenAI Product Roles

The position is at the intersection of domain knowledge and AI skills. This includes system design for reliable LLM-based systems, framework development for evaluation, and ensuring that AI-generated content is safe for real-world users. The salary range is Rs. 12 LPA to Rs 35 LPA, with the LLM engineering/domain roles (BFSI/Healthcare/Legal) being on the higher side.

Build Skill Stacks, Not Skill Lists

Bengaluru holds 35 to 39% of all GCC activity. Hyderabad captures another 20 to 23%. Tier-2 cities, including Coimbatore, Indore, and Jaipur, now account for 10 to 12% of GCC hiring and are growing 20% faster than metros.

The most resilient move in 2026 is not chasing the hottest title. Pick a role that matches how you naturally think. Build the foundational stack with genuine depth. Layer adjacent skills over two to three years. That combination is precisely what companies are paying a 1.7x premium to find.
