iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Is the Upgrade Worth the Price?

Overview:

  • iPhone 18 Pro adds camera, performance, battery and storage improvements over 17 Pro.

  • The iPhone 17 Pro remains compelling for buyers seeking better overall value.

  • The Rs 30,000 price gap makes upgrading worthwhile only for select users.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro brings several upgrades over the iPhone 17 Pro, including a new processor, a variable-aperture main camera, improved battery life, and additional AI capabilities. But with the newer model carrying a significant price premium in India, the upgrade may not make sense for everyone.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs. 1,64,900 for the 256GB model in India, while the iPhone 17 Pro launched at Rs. 1,34,900 for the same storage configuration. That puts the difference at Rs. 30,000 before retailer, bank, or exchange offers.

Camera Gets Biggest Change

One of the biggest changes in the new device is the iPhone 18 Pro's 48 MP Fusion Main Camera. Unlike the iPhone 17 Pro’s fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture, the new model offers a variable aperture with ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0 options.

The variable aperture makes the new camera more flexible by letting you control how much light enters the lens in different situations.

As for the other components, both models have 48MP main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras, and the latter provides 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom.

For people who take photos and record video, the camera system will be the main reason for choosing the new model.

A20 Pro Targets Performance and AI

The iPhone 18 Pro runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, replacing the A19 Pro used in the previous generation. The newer chip features a 7-core GPU and enhanced neural acceleration aimed at demanding AI workloads.

Third-party analysis puts the performance gains at roughly 20 percent for CPU performance and 40 percent for GPU performance.

The difference should be more apparent in demanding games, video processing, creative applications and AI-heavy tasks than in everyday activities such as messaging, browsing or streaming.

Battery Life

According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro will provide up to 36 hours of video playback, compared with 33 hours on the iPhone 17 Pro.

It might not be a significant increase, but it could matter for people who use their iPhones daily for photos or other tasks.

Changes in Display are Minor

The iPhone 18 Pro features the same 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion as well as the smaller Dynamic Island that allows for up to three Live Activities at once.

So, there are no major display improvements that would convince someone to switch from the older model to the new iPhone 18 Pro.

Which iPhone Pro Should You Buy?

The iPhone 18 Pro is clearly superior to its predecessor. Still, the Rs. 30,000 price difference gives the latter advantages and may lead you to choose the iPhone 17 Pro, especially if retailers offer additional discounts that bring the price down further.

If buyers prioritize the latest camera technology, AI, performance, battery life, or 2TB storage, the iPhone 18 Pro is the better choice. In other cases, the iPhone 17 Pro can be a good option given that the A19 Pro chip, ProMotion display, and 48MP camera system are enough for daily tasks.

Ultimately, it depends on the price: with a big discount, the iPhone 17 Pro will be a better deal. If price is not an issue, the iPhone 18 Pro is the better long-term choice.
