In this interview, Ankush Gupta, a Senior Solution Architect and cybersecurity strategist, demonstrates how his work in telecom, fintech, retail, and large-scale enterprise systems has influenced his methods for detecting hidden risks within intricate systems. 

Gupta uses his 20 years of professional experience and his creation of the FOZTMA-CS zero trust framework to show how current data models do not meet modern needs while graph-driven intelligence assists organizations in discovering vital dependencies that otherwise remain hidden.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and your current role?

My name is Ankush Gupta, and I am a Senior Solution Architect with over two decades of experience delivering cutting-edge enterprise solutions across fintech, telecom, retail, and Security. My work sits at the intersection of advanced technology and business impact, combining AI/GenAI, cloud-native systems (AWS, Azure), and intelligent automation to design scalable platforms that transform operations and elevate customer experience.

What key experiences or milestones have shaped your journey in technology and engineering leadership? 

My work includes strategic initiatives where I lead teams to develop essential security products that provide protection for secure environments in multiple countries. I created the FOZTMA CS Security Framework, which helps organizations improve their security protections. I contributed to a national security framework that supports a major project that allows users to change their mobile service providers within a 15-minute period because the project could disrupt operations unless implemented with secure methods. My work includes leading important programs in cybersecurity, enterprise architecture, and AI product development. It mainly focuses on designing solutions that can be implemented at a large scale.

What were some of the early challenges you faced while working in large-scale industrial or enterprise systems?

One of the biggest lessons I learned was that enterprise systems are rarely clean, isolated, or fully documented. In large-scale environments, every application depends on several others, so even a small change can have a downstream impact. Understanding those dependencies and gaining confidence before making changes was a major learning curve.  

Another challenge was working with legacy systems. The majority of enterprise environments depend on their existing systems. They maintain essential business operations through outdated technology, custom-developed software, and integrated applications. The challenge extended beyond its technical aspects. Systems often involve operating essential business processes at high volume, which makes any system downtime unacceptable.

What led you to explore graph-based approaches for solving complex data challenges?

In large-scale systems, the real value comes from understanding how entities connect across areas like risk, operations, and fraud. The key questions focus on relationships, impact, and chain reactions, not just what happened.

I saw that many complex challenges stem from connections rather than isolated data. Traditional models work for reporting, but struggle with interconnected behavior and multi-step dependencies. That is what led me to graph-based approaches, which are better suited for capturing relationships and delivering more explainable insights for real-world problems.

In simple terms, how do graph models help organizations uncover hidden risks and dependencies?

Most traditional data systems store information in rows and columns, which is useful for transactions and reporting. But hidden risks usually do not reside in a single record. They appear in the relationships between people, systems, accounts, devices, vendors, applications, or transactions.

A graph model represents these items as connected nodes and links. The organizations gain the ability to identify patterns that exist beyond their normal detection capabilities. Graph models help organizations uncover hidden risks and dependencies. They show how entities are connected. The system presents evidence of interconnectedness between records. Thus, allowing users to track how information moves through their system. The system enables users to discover hidden failure points and assessment point concentrations.

What are some real-world scenarios where this approach has created measurable business impact?

In fraud detection, graphs are especially powerful because fraud rarely happens in isolation. A single transaction may look normal, but when connected to shared devices, addresses, accounts, or patterns of movement, a larger fraud ring becomes visible. That can reduce false negatives and often improves fraud prevention without blocking too many legitimate customers.

Graph-based value comes from exposing relationships that traditional row-and-column analysis often misses. In practice, that has translated into better risk identification, faster incident resolution, stronger fraud detection, improved prioritization, and more informed business decisions. 

What should organizations keep in mind when adopting such advanced data architectures? 

Organizations should adopt advanced data architectures with a clear focus on business outcomes, not just technology. The priority is solving real problems, supported by strong data quality and governance from the start. Even the most advanced systems fail without reliable, well-managed data.

How do you ensure performance and scalability when dealing with constantly evolving, high-volume data? 

To ensure performance and scalability in constantly evolving, high-volume data environments, I focus on scalable architecture, efficient data modeling, and strong observability. I design systems to scale horizontally, decouple workloads through events or queues, and optimize for actual access patterns rather than assumptions. I also build controls for monitoring, load testing, and schema evolution so the platform can continue to perform reliably as data volume and business needs grow. 

What advice would you give to leaders looking to use data more effectively for better decision-making? 

Leaders should start with the decisions they want to improve and align data to support them. The organization needs to use trustworthy metrics that provide high-quality data that remains easy to use for decision-making because it displays actual business operations. Organizations should use data to predict trends because it needs to test options during the early stages of their processes. The process needs faster feedback loops and improved system visibility. The organization needs to develop data literacy skills among all teams so decision makers can understand insights while they formulate better questions and make choices with certainty.
