The evolution and advancements in technology, such as IoT, cloud computing, and more have led to a new data revolution. This immense production of data comes from when people browse on the internet, use smartphones and other internet of things devices every day, every time. However, this extensive data creation and usage raised a question regarding the security of individuals' data. According to DigiCert senior director of business development, Dean Coclin, identity data is created on us all of the time, but how protected it is.
Speaking at the DigiCert Security Summit in San Diego, Coclin said "As we browse, we create more and more data every day, and this data is about us and we should be sure it is kept secure and in the right format. Now with more devices available, cloud computing and IoT, we have ended up with the situation where we have big data, but not the big data biology on how it should be managed."
Today, there are several data privacy acts focused on the rights of people. In this context, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a supervisory authority, was created in 2018 to protect the privacy of individuals within the European Union. And focusing on the rights of populaces in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) has introduced been in the United States. This legislation ensures the security of data privacy and assists individuals to understand what data is collected and how it is sold or disclosed.
Currently, we have approached the situation where if someone can steal personal data, its privacy is not guaranteed that can put an individual at risk for identity theft and other personal security breaches.
Most privacy protection protocols are still susceptible to authorized individuals who might access the data. And the burden on these authorized individuals is about privacy law, not technology.
Focusing on anonymity on the web, Coclin emphasized that there is a push to be more anonymous on the web, and particularly in the case of electronic voting as you don't want people to know who you voted for.
In the modern online and connected world, where massive amounts of personal data are shared and transferred around the globe instantaneously, it is increasingly difficult for people to maintain control of their personal information. Thus, there is a need for a strong privacy law for consumers that they need. And companies and other entities, whether at state, federal, or around the world that collect people's data need to comply with an over-arching privacy law.
