Google may be preparing a significant upgrade to its TV streaming hardware, with a new Google TV Streamer reportedly in development. The device could add built-in microphones, room-presence detection, and improved internal hardware, potentially making TV control more convenient for users.
According to reports, the company is working on a successor to the Google TV Streamer launched in 2024. Google has not officially announced the new model, so its specifications, pricing, and release date remain unconfirmed.
One of the biggest reported additions is a set of microphones built directly into the streaming device. If the feature makes it to the final product, users could issue “Hey Google” commands without picking up the remote.
This could make everyday tasks, such as searching for a film, opening an app, or controlling playback, more convenient. It would also bring the device closer to a hands-free smart speaker experience.
The current Google TV Streamer relies on voice input through its remote. Moving microphone support to the main unit could make voice interaction easier, particularly when the remote is out of reach.
The next model is also reportedly being developed with presence-sensing technology. This could allow the device to detect when someone enters the room and respond by activating a Google Photos screensaver or displaying ambient information such as the time and weather.
Similar functionality has appeared in some smart televisions, including models running Google TV. Bringing it to a standalone streaming device could make an existing television feel more responsive without requiring users to buy a new screen. However, Google has not confirmed the feature's exact capabilities.
The reported upgrade could extend to a faster processor and more internal storage than the current model’s 32GB. These changes may help apps load more smoothly and provide additional room for applications and other data.
Google is also reportedly updating the bundled remote. The overall design may remain familiar, but two additional shortcut buttons could join the existing YouTube and Netflix controls. The dedicated Find My Remote button is expected to remain.
The potential refresh comes after Google raised the current Streamer’s US price from USD 99.99 to USD 149.99 in August 2026. It's unclear whether the next model will cost more.

For people considering a streaming-device upgrade, the reported hands-free controls and hardware improvements could make waiting worthwhile. However, Google has not revealed a launch timeline, and the final product may differ from the features currently being reported.
Until an official announcement arrives, buyers should weigh their immediate needs against the possibility of a more capable successor.
