SEGA is probably planning something big for JRPG fans in 2025. It’s been nearly 25 years since one of the finest JRPGs by SEGA, Skies of Arcadia, was launched. This October, the game will step into its 25th anniversary, but before that, SEGA has taken a step that enlightened a hope of getting a remastered version of this game.
Skies of Arcadia used to be one of the most beloved JRPGs ever, released by SEGA. Its fanbase is so high that even after years, fans are willing to get some remastered version or a sequel of this game. Though there are a range of better JRPGs available at this point, gamers are still in love with its story, colorful characters, and battle mechanisms.
After its initial launch in 2000, the game was released on different platforms till 2003. However, it has never received any post-launch care from SEGA in two decades. Initially, the game was launched on the Dreamcast in 2000.
Later, it was expanded to Skies of Arcadia Legends, released on GameCube. Later, this Tokyo-based company completely ditched the plan of releasing a sequel or PC version of the game. Instead, there has been a complete silence throughout.
After this long silence, when fans have almost lost all hope, suddenly, on January 24, 2025, the X (formerly Twitter) account of Sega Informant noted, “SEGA has re-registered the trademark for Skies Of Arcadia (and Japanese name, Eternal Arcadia).”
The important part here is that SEGA didn’t only register the new trademark for Skies of Arcadia, but it did the same with the Japanese version of the game, known as Eternal Arcadia. Since this news aired, fans have jumped into exploring the hidden meaning of this sudden trademark claim.
According to various sources, the trademark for these games was originally filed on January 16, but the news was brought to light on January 24. The reason behind this is still unknown; however, Dreamcast and GameCube fans have been going wild since they heard about this.
Previously, a few years back in 2020, the original developer of the game, Kenji Hiruta, mentioned that the remake or the remaster of Skies of Arcadia completely depends on SEGA. So, the fans are boldly assuming that, with this trademark, SEGA is hinting at its plan to bring a remastered version of the game to make the 25th anniversary special.
Well, this assumption can’t be ignored entirely because SEGA has never forgotten its roots. Therefore, multiple Skies of Arcadia characters have made their way to different games throughout these years. For example, Vyse, Aika, and Fina appeared in Valkyria Chronicles, a strategic RPG. Aside from that, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed also got Vyse.
There’s another thing that triggered this remaster assumption: SEGA’s current obsession with reviving former franchises. Recently, this Japanese developer company has revived a number of its classic franchises, including, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Sonic Racing.
Considering these, it doesn’t seem completely baseless that SEGA is probably trying to revive one of its best JRPGs after more than two decades. Well, there’s another thing to note as well. Skies of Arcadia had another trademark renewal in 2012, which wasn’t any remake or remastered version of the game. Generally, trademark renewal doesn’t mean anything significant for the developers and publishers.
This time, the chances of a remastered version are still high because, reportedly, SEGA is working on a few remastered games. So, maybe Skies of Arcadia is among them, or maybe this trademark renewal means nothing at all, just like what happened back in 2012.
