Overview:

  • Rockstar Games is known for creating immersive open worlds that go far beyond simple maps. Each environment is carefully designed to feel alive, reactive, and deeply connected to the story.

  • From crime-filled cities to vast frontier landscapes, Rockstar’s open worlds allow players to explore freely, interact naturally, and experience unforgettable narratives. These worlds have helped define the modern open-world genre.

  • Over the years, Rockstar has experimented with different settings, scales, and themes. Below are some of the studio’s most iconic open worlds that continue to influence gamers and developers alike.

Open-world games take players to an alien world and allow them to explore every corner of that in-game environment at their own pace. With extremely well portrayed worlds like Teyvat from Genshin Impact, The Lands Between from Elden Ring, and more, players craving vast and adventurous open-world games have inclined.

Rockstar isn’t the only gaming studio to offer impressive open-world games, but it has mastered the art better than most. Despite offering a missing-centric gameplay approach, the gaming giant fills in-game worlds with interesting NPCs, intense storytelling, and spontaneous events to make exploration more rewarding.

If you’re waiting for GTA 6 but want to explore some other iconic open worlds created by the studio, we have a range of games that hardcore Rockstar fans shouldn’t miss out on.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Best Open World for Immersive Storytelling

Release Date: October 26, 2018

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Genre: Action-Adventure

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the finest open-world games Rockstar has ever created. Set in a hauntingly beautiful open world of the American Wild West, the game shows the struggle of Arthur Morgan, the protagonist and a member of the Van der Linde gang. The game’s portrayal of deserts, forests, and small towns feels authentic and alive.

Every random NPC encounter, moral choice, and piece of storytelling creates a lasting effect on gamers' minds. Combinedly, these elements make the exploration meaningful.

Grand Theft Auto V: Best Modern Open-World City

Release Date: September 17, 2013

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows

Genre: Action-Adventure

GTA 5 features Los Santos, one of the most detailed cities ever created in gaming history. Rockstar Games took inspiration from Southern California, and the in-game map blends urban streets, beaches, deserts, and mountains to provide players with a realistic experience. The most interesting part of Los Santos is that the world reacts to players’ actions just as it does in the real world.

Bully: Best Compact Open World

Release Date: October 17, 2006

Platforms: PlayStation 2, Windows, Android, Xbox 360

Genre: Action-Adventure

Bully Rockstar proved that the open world doesn't need to be massive to be engaging. This action-adventure game is set at Bullworth Academy, with the storyline revolving around the classrooms, dorms, and nearby neighborhoods. With the change of the school calendar, players’ activities and interactions differ. This particular feature offers a sandbox experience full of humor, mischief, and character-driven storytelling.

GTA Vice City: Best Stylized Open World

Release Date: October 27, 2002

Platform: PlayStation 2

Genre: Action-Adventure

GTA Vice City’s open world is inspired by 1980s Miami. The developer team has portrayed the in-game world as more colorful and stylish than in any previous games in the franchise. The Neon lights, beaches, and nightlife have given the city a distinct personality that's hard to miss.

Indeed, the game has technical limits for its ‘not so advanced era,’ Vice City’s atmosphere, music, and visual identity made it one of Rockstar’s most memorable settings.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles: Best Open World for Racing

Release Date: October 24, 2008

Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Genre: Racing

Midnight Club: Los Angeles showcases Rockstar Games’ ability to design open worlds beyond action games. The in-game map recreates Los Angeles with pinpoint accuracy and lets players race freely through real streets. The open-ended structure of the game further makes it a great choice that emphasizes speed, shortcuts, and exploration to make the city a core part of the gameplay experience.

Which Rockstar Open World Is the Most Iconic?

From my perspective, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are two of the standout titles with the most realistically portrayed open worlds. Though both games excel for different reasons, the one common aspect that they share is the open-world portrayal.

While the GTA 5 map shows no limits to diversity, it combines dense urban areas, open roadways, and natural streams all within one map. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2 is courted by emotional involvement rather than speed and chaos.

Random activities and strange NPC behaviors would be impossible to associate with GTA games. Conversely, Red Dead Redemption 2 uses animals, moral choices, and almost hidden storytelling to make the whole journey exciting.

These two games, however, demonstrate not only Rockstar's talent in making worlds but also the variety of player experiences through worlds with exceptional depth. I would recommend no other than GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption as the two best titles to dive into without a second thought, if it is me who is recommending where to start.
