What Is NYT Connections?

The New York Times' daily word game, NYT Connections, challenges players to group 16 words into four sets of four based on shared themes. The problem is to recognize the differences without identity overlaps between the categories. It's free to play on the NYT website, and the Games app releases a new puzzle every midnight.

There’s only one correct solution to each game. It ends when players can make four incorrect guesses. The puzzle is made much harder since some words can fit multiple categories.

The colour-coded groups indicate difficulty:

  • Yellow: Easiest

  • Green and Blue: Moderate

  • Purple: Involving wordplay - often the trickiest.

The players only have one solution per day and must carefully analyze the grid for connections.

How Today’s Puzzle Played Out?

The solution of the yellow group seems quite straightforward. Words such as BONUS, EQUITY, and PROMOTION carry a literal agreement to positive outcome work. The green group is distinctly simple, including words indicating dismissal or disregard. This is a theme aligned with DISCOUNT, FORGET and IGNORE.

Common crackers such as ANIMAL and GOLDFISH constitute the blue group. Savory snack categories, although less well-known, such as CLUB and RITZ, also fit under savory snack categories.

For those unacquainted with the Eloise book series, the purple group presents the greatest potential challenge. These books take place in a New York City Hotel, with the titular character Eloise, the Plaza Hotel, and her pet Pug, a turtle.
