The gaming universe is in constant flux, always buzzing with new developments that keep the community on its toes. While 2025 has a long list of games to be released, which, in fact, include games like GTA 6 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, still Team Cherry’s upcoming metroidvania game has made its way into the discussion.

Hollow Knight: Silksong will be the sequel to the 2017-released game Hollow Knight. However, this game has become a meme for game enthusiasts, for it was announced in 2019, but it was never released in the last half a decade. Recently, some updates once again surfaced to fuel the curiosity of gamers.

How Things Started with a Reddit Post

The gaming community is now super-hyped for the Nintendo Switch 2 finally appearing this year and GTA 6 rumors taking things to a new level. A day before the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement surfaced, suddenly, Hollow Knight fans noticed that on January 15, the co-director of Team Cherry, William Pellen, posted something interesting on his new X (formerly Twitter) account.

The post mentioned, “Something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.” Along with that, he even changed the profile picture of this Reddit account to a chocolate cake. The sudden appearance of Pellen with this strange update and his choice of a chocolate cake as a profile picture created a wave of speculation among fans.

What Fans Have Been Expecting From Team Cherry

Since it’s been almost six years without any update since the announcement of the sequel of Hollow Knight, the excitement among the community members was pacified. The recent post from William Pellen has stirred the lost curiosity after years.

The post was made on January 15, and Pellen told fans to watch for something scheduled on January 16. For a while, there was already a rumor that Nintendo was going to reveal Switch 2 officially on January 16, and that’s what it did. Therefore, the first thing that came to the minds of Hollow Knight fans was that, somehow, these two things were connected.

To find this connection, they dived deeper into this matter and even searched for the cake image that Pellen had set as his profile picture. The search results led them to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe by Bon Appétit, published on April 2, 2024.

That’s again connecting the post with Nintendo Switch 2, as Nintendo Switch 2 Direct will take place on April 2, 2025. Therefore, speculations started circulating that Hollow Knight: Silksong will come on Switch 2.

The X handle that the Team Cherry director used for the post was a new one. Fans even started decoding what does @everydruidwaswr mean. As they analyzed it a bit, it seemed to be connected to the Druid of The Moss Temple NPC, which again hinted at Silksong’s existence.

Anyway, the hype didn’t last long, as a new update came to dishearten fans.

What’s The Actual Story Behind Those Posts?

The post was massively promising, but the story behind it was a lot more upsetting. When fans started speculating that finally Hollow Knight: Silksong ARG would come on Nintendo Switch 2, one community member and YouTuber, fireb0rn, who mainly emphasized the cake theory, posted on his X handle that Team Cherry’s marketing and publishing chief, Matthew Griffin, had contacted him following his posts and confirmed, “there was no Silksong ARG.”

He even mentioned that the team confirmed that the chocolate cake thing has no connection to the game. The changes that William made to his account were all separate things without any connection to each other. Team Cherry has apologized for misleading fans.

Heartbroken fans weren’t satisfied with all these. They wanted the developer team to release an official statement on Reddit confirming all these.

A Twist Still Awaits Silksong Fans

With these disappointing updates, fans have already lost hope of getting any sequel to their beloved Hollow Knight. After more than half a decade of waiting, they finally received a ray of hope, but that’s also gone with fireb0rn’s statement.

Initially, Silksong was set to release in the first half of 2023. Then, the team confirmed that they needed more time. During June 2024, a playtest happened, and again, there was complete silence, leaving fans confused about the game's development.

With this latest update, where fireb0rn claimed that there’s no Silksong ARG, Team Cherry’s marketing head Matthew Griffin appeared with an alternate version. To cheer the disappointed fans, he stated, “Yes the game is real, progressing and will release.”

That’s quite a relief for those waiting for this Hollow Knight sequel for a long time. The release date is still unclear, but the game still exists and has initiated another wave of speculation among fans.
