Apple's iPhone 16E, released on February 19, 2025, enters the market as a more affordable alternative within the iPhone 16 series. Priced at $599, it aims to provide a balance between cost and functionality. This review delves into its design, display, performance, camera capabilities, battery life, and overall value proposition.

Design and Build Quality

The iPhone 16E adopts a design reminiscent of earlier iPhone models, featuring dimensions of 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm and a weight of 167 grams. Its flat-edged aluminum frame and glass back provide a familiar aesthetic. However, it lacks the Dynamic Island feature found in higher-end models, opting instead for a small notch at the top of the display. Available in Black and White, the color options are limited compared to the broader palette offered by the iPhone 15.

Display

Equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED screen, the iPhone 16E offers a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of approximately 457 PPI. The display supports HDR, True Tone, and a wide color gamut (P3), ensuring vibrant and accurate color reproduction. However, it maintains a 60Hz refresh rate, which may be considered outdated compared to competitors offering higher refresh rates. The screen is protected by Ceramic Shield Glass, enhancing durability against drops and scratches.

Performance

At its core, the iPhone 16E is powered by the Apple A18 Bionic chipset, featuring a hexa-core processor with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. This configuration ensures smooth performance across various applications, from daily tasks to more demanding processes. The device includes 8GB of RAM and offers storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, though it lacks expandable storage via a microSD card. While the A18 Bionic is a powerful chip, the iPhone 16E's GPU has one less core compared to higher-end models, which may result in slightly reduced graphics performance.

Camera

The iPhone 16E is equipped with a single 48MP rear camera with an f/1.6 aperture, incorporating features such as optical image stabilization and hybrid focus pixels. This setup allows for high-resolution photos and 2x telephoto capabilities. However, it lacks certain software features found in higher-end models, such as ProRaw and macro mode. Despite these omissions, the camera performs admirably in various lighting conditions, producing images with good detail and color accuracy.  The front-facing camera is a 12MP wide-angle lens with an f/1.9 aperture, supporting features like autofocus and Retina Flash, suitable for selfies and video calls.

Battery Life

One of the standout features of the iPhone 16E is its impressive battery life. Reports indicate that it can last up to 52 hours of general usage, surpassing many competitors in its class.  This extended battery performance ensures that users can go through their day without the constant need to recharge, making it a reliable companion for daily activities.

Connectivity and Features

The iPhone 16E supports 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring fast and reliable wireless connections. It includes Face ID for secure authentication but lacks a fingerprint sensor. The device is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, capable of withstanding submersion up to 6 meters for 30 minutes. Notably, the iPhone 16E does not support MagSafe, a feature present in other iPhone models, which may be a drawback for users invested in the MagSafe ecosystem.

Value Proposition

Priced at $599, the iPhone 16E positions itself as an affordable entry into the Apple ecosystem. However, its value is subject to individual needs and preferences. While it offers robust performance, excellent battery life, and reliable camera capabilities, it lacks certain features found in higher-end models, such as MagSafe compatibility and a higher refresh rate display. Potential buyers should weigh these omissions against the cost savings to determine if the iPhone 16E aligns with their expectations and requirements.

The iPhone 16E serves as a testament to Apple's ability to deliver a balanced smartphone experience at a more accessible price point. It combines a familiar design, reliable performance, and impressive battery life, making it a suitable choice for users seeking an affordable iPhone. However, the absence of certain features and limited color options may influence the decision of potential buyers. Ultimately, the iPhone 16E offers a compelling package for those prioritizing core functionalities over the latest technological advancements.
