Turtle Facial Recognition: An Effort to Make Advance Conservation Efforts

Written By : Sayantani Sanyal

Turtle facial recognition is an advanced step toward wildlife conservation

Wildlife conservation is at the heart of some of the major environmental conservation debates in the world, and wildlife conservation practices have advanced after the application of artificial intelligence. AI helps researchers determine the location of animals, date of sighting, migration patterns, and even their specific animal social group. AI and its adjoining technologies have been used by conservationists to monitor and protect animals in their natural habitat. Recently, scientists have found a way to improve turtle reidentification and support machine learning projects across Africa via turtle facial recognition.

Protecting the ecosystems around us is extremely critical to safeguarding the future of the planet. New AI systems are making progress in conservation efforts by studying the behavior of animal communities to help conserve the diminishing ecosystem. The researchers' mission is to help benefit humanity with the technologies they develop and broaden the machine learning community and engage with wider audiences in addressing important problems using AI.

Biologists claim that turtles are indicator species, but they are on the verge of being extinct. They are important for the ecosystem since they cultivate, providing a habitat for numerous fish and other sea creatures. Traditionally, individual turtles have been identified and tracked by biologists with physical tags, but frequent loss or erosion of these makes it an unreliable method. To help solve these challenges, researchers have launched a machine learning challenge called Turtle Recall. The challenge aimed to increase the reliability and speed of turtle reidentification and also offer a way to replace the use of uncomfortable physical tags altogether.

The importance of AI in animal conservation cannot be overstated and this initiative might be the best way to turn around the underwater ecosystem. AI technologies advance toward building a healthy and sustainable future for the planet.
