Warner Bros. delayed the release of Mickey 17 by a year. The film, directed by Bong Joon-ho, is an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7. It follows a futuristic space mission where Robert Pattinson plays a character who regenerates after death. The movie is Bong’s first since the Oscar-winning Parasite.
The story takes place in 2054. The human population departs from Earth to settle on the distant world of Niflheim. Politician Kenneth Marshall, played by Mark Ruffalo, leads the mission with a vision of creating a “pure” society. Mickey, played by Pattinson, is an “Expendable.” His job is to take on dangerous tasks and regenerate when he dies. When Mickey 17 survives an accident but is replaced by Mickey 18, conflict arises.
Pattinson performs Mickey in his two incarnations while creating perceptible physical differences between them. Mickey 17 possesses weak traits in contrast to Mickey 18 who displays bold characteristics. Throughout the story conflicts arise between Mickey 17 (played by Pattinson) and Mickey 18 because of their existence and Nasha's (played by Naomi Ackie) place in their lives. The film combines action, humor and social commentary.
The production design enhances the film’s themes. Icy landscape of Niflheim is a direct opposite of the futuristic recruitment center on Earth. Bong arranged his tale in a complex storytelling style which keeps viewers interested even though the runtime is extensive. The monologue delivered by Naomi Ackie stands out from the rest of the performance.
The film includes satirical elements, including a parody of a populist leader. Some scenes draw parallels to real-world events. A subplot about a character’s search for the perfect sauce adds humor, though it may not resonate with everyone.
Mickey 17 blends sci-fi and satire with Bong’s signature storytelling. Throughout its runtime the movie examines themes of identity, power and survival while maintaining an entertaining tone. Its strong acting talent and eye-catching scenery gives this production an exclusive cinematic experience to viewers.
