Overview:

  • Power varies across Middle-earth, spanning physical strength, magical abilities, wisdom, supernatural influence and leadership.

  • Ancient beings such as Maiar and powerful Elves dominate the upper ranks of this ranking.

  • Sauron claims the top position because of his extraordinary supernatural power, influence, intelligence and mastery of the One Ring.

From ordinary mortals and skilled warriors to ancient supernatural beings, The Lord of the Rings features characters with vastly different forms of power. Some rely on physical strength, while others possess magical abilities, immense wisdom or supernatural influence.

The Mightiest Heroes and Villains

Ranking them is subjective, but considering their abilities, origins and major feats, here are 10 of the most notable characters ranked from least to most powerful:

1.Gollum

Gollum is not a typical powerhouse, but due to the years he spent underground, he has become highly agile and resilient. The link he shares with the One Ring gives him a psychological understanding of how corruptive it is.

His main advantage is survival skills, which help him cope with the situations that would be too much for other characters. However, his capabilities do not compare to those of warriors, Elves, and magical creatures of Middle-earth.

2.Legolas

Legolas is one of the most skillful warriors among the Fellowship. With his phenomenal eyesight, agility, speed, and superb archery skills, he is able to vanquish his enemies with great accuracy. He is able to maneuver easily through rough terrain and is always calm even during heated battles. Even though Legolas is far stronger than your average warrior, his powers are not magical but physical. Thus, he ranks quite low on this scale.

3. Aragorn

Aragorn is a combination of superior fighting skill, leadership, and endurance with the bloodline of the Númenóreans. Being an heir to Isildur, Aragorn has characteristics that go beyond what other Men have.

He has mastered the use of the sword as well as leading armies, thus being among the best mortal heroes in Middle-earth. Unfortunately, he does not have the magical powers like those of the Istari, Maiar, and ancient Elves.

4. Elrond

Elrond is a wise and powerful half-elf king who is among the most important people in Middle-earth. Elrond is a skilled healer and a member of the Wise. The long life, the knowledge and the connection to the Rings of Power make him a much stronger character than many other mortal characters.

5. Witch-king of Angmar

The Witch-king of Angmar is the most powerful of the Nazgûl and the most important servant of Sauron. He was once a man but transformed into a Ringwraith by virtue of one of the rings. His supernatural powers give him control over fear, great physical strength and ability to lead Sauron's armies.

6. Saruman

Saruman belongs to the group called the Istari and that means he is in reality a Maia sent to Middle-earth. Saruman is a very powerful enemy due to the vast amount of his knowledge, magic power and an incredible persuasive voice. Saruman’s fall into evil shows how dangerous he can be due to his powers and ambitions.

7. Balrog of Moria

Durin’s Bane is an extremely powerful Balrog as well as a corrupted Maia that worked for Morgoth. The great physical and supernatural strength of the being made it one of the most terrifying creatures to encounter in the journey of the Fellowship. Gandalf managed to defeat the Balrog only after fighting it for two days.

8. Galadriel

One of the most powerful Elves left in Middle Earth is Galadriel. Her great knowledge, spiritual powers, and power of the Elves make her far more than a traditional monarch. With Nenya, she contributes to the preservation of Lothlórien. Her true potential can be realized through Frodo giving the One Ring to her and imagining all the powers she can have.

9. Gandalf the White

Gandalf is one of the Maiar who carries much more potential than he displays as an old wizard. He comes back as Gandalf the White after slaying the Balrog and has more power as well as authority to show his real powers. He becomes the leader of the Istari and helps in overthrowing the evil designs of Sauron.

10. Sauron

Sauron is number one because of his unique blend of supernatural powers, sorcery, and wisdom. As one of the powerful Maiar, Sauron lived for ages trying to rule Middle-earth. He made the One Ring and put a great deal of his powers into the Ring, thus becoming the core of his domination over the other Rings of Power.
