Overview:

  • Indian OTT platforms are increasingly turning to unscripted formats as scripted original production slows and spending becomes more selective.

  • Reality shows offer platforms repeat audiences, social media visibility, sponsorship opportunities and potential for long-running entertainment franchises.

  • Regional unscripted formats are gaining importance as platforms compete for India’s rapidly expanding multilingual OTT audience.

India’s OTT industry is changing its priorities in 2026. After years of platforms spending heavily on scripted originals, reality shows, comedy, documentaries and other unscripted formats are getting more attention.

The reason is simple: platforms want content that can attract viewers regularly, stay relevant on social media and, importantly, make financial sense.

Scripted Content Faces a Slowdown

The shift comes at a time when OTT platforms are becoming more careful about what they commission.

According to Ormax Media, the number of Indian streaming originals declined 13% in 2025, following an 18% drop in 2024. Of the 274 originals released in 2025, fiction series still accounted for 71%. Scripted shows clearly remain the backbone of Indian streaming, but the fall in overall output shows that platforms are becoming more selective.

Unscripted content offers an alternative. A successful reality format can return season after season, giving platforms a property they can build around rather than relying on a completely new show every time.

Reality Shows are Finding Their Audience

Some of India’s biggest entertainment franchises are already showing why this strategy works.

JioHotstar reported a 40% increase in watch time for Bigg Boss across its editions. Other reality properties, including Laughter Chefs, Bigg Boss and Pati Patni Aur Panga, have also been highlighted by JioStar for their performance.

The appeal is not restricted to established television franchises. Digital-first shows such as Lock Upp and India’s Got Latent have demonstrated how unscripted content can generate strong audience conversations beyond the platform itself.

That social-media factor matters. A controversial moment, funny exchange or unexpected reaction from a reality show can quickly become a clip, meme or discussion online, giving the programme another life outside the episode.

The Economics Make Sense

For streaming companies, unscripted programming can also offer greater flexibility.

A successful reality show can run across several seasons and attract sponsors and brand integrations. Its format can also be adapted for different audiences and languages.

This is particularly useful in a market as diverse as India, where platforms are competing for viewers across regions rather than only in major Hindi-speaking markets.

According to a 2026 industry presentation citing the FICCI-EY report, India had more than 975 million OTT and digital viewers in 2025. Around 56% of paid OTT viewing was regional.

That growing regional audience is encouraging platforms to experiment with local formats. JioHotstar, for example, has launched Bhojpuri Bawaal, described as India’s first Bhojpuri celebrity reality series.

More Than Just a Cost-Cutting Move

The growing focus on unscripted content is not necessarily about replacing scripted entertainment. Fiction continues to play a major role in the OTT business, particularly when platforms are looking to build prestige around original series and films.

Instead, the rise of unscripted programming reflects a broader change in how streaming companies are thinking about audiences.

Viewers are no longer discovering content only through recommendations on an OTT home screen. They encounter shows through Instagram clips, YouTube videos, memes and conversations among friends. Reality and unscripted formats are naturally suited to that environment as they create moments that people can discuss while a show is still running.

For platforms, that creates something valuable: a reason for viewers to come back every week.

In 2026, therefore, India’s OTT battle is not only about producing the next big scripted drama. It is increasingly about finding formats that can become long-running franchises, shows audiences watch, talk about and return to week after week.
