The memecoin market cap is steadily recovering after its recent slump

Written By : IndustryTrends

Meme coins are cryptocurrencies inspired by viral trends, pop culture, and internet jokes, with values much lower than those of other cryptocurrencies. In spite of that, they have been consistently popular among investors from all over the world, many of whom are looking to include them in their portfolios. Some of those just getting started in the ecosystem take the meme coin route as well, since losses are not as severe as those that can occur with Bitcoin or Ethereum transactions.

As a result, more and more traders have been looking where to buy Dogecoin over the last year in order to determine the best times to start buying or selling. The last months of 2025 haven’t been the best for the ecosystem, though, something that went against the movements that investors were used to based on historical data. November in particular has always been associated with strong market performance, but this rule didn’t apply in 2025. However, the tides have been turning since the beginning of 2026, and researchers believe that the marketplace is currently on the mend.

300%

Transaction volumes have jumped by almost 300% in the aftermath of the rise of the market cap rate by almost 25% in January 2026, with the ecosystem rebounding from the lows that impacted the entire sector. Crypto traders have returned to meme coins at the beginning of the new year, rejuvenating the marketplace and providing it with a good head start from the very beginning of the first quarter. The meme coin market cap is close to $50 billion as of January 22nd, a significant increase compared to the $38 billion recorded on December 29th.

Dogecoin recorded significant gains during this timeframe, with growth levels going slightly over 20%, while Shiba Inu rose by 19.9%. Pepe was the true winner, though, soaring by close to 70%. The transaction volume levels spiked as well, going from $2.17 billion to $8.7 billion between December and January, a 300% increase that investors and analysts alike noticed right away. This is particularly noteworthy because meme coins recorded significant losses last year after their initial popularity fizzled out. They fell by more than 65%, bottoming at a market cap of $35 billion on December 19th, the lowest level recorded the entire year.

One of the main reasons for that is the fact that risk-taking behavior has become less common among investors, with many seeing them as one of the riskiest bets in cryptocurrencies. The rally could indicate that traders are again willing to take on more risk and that the market would support their endeavors.

Connection with altcoins

The meme coins are part of the larger group of altcoins, and their movements are therefore connected. According to market analysts, the bounce in the meme coin market began after FUD reached record levels among retail traders. This happened just a couple of days after Christmas, and many have begun saying that the important thing now is to keep up with the latest developments to remain timely and capitalize on assets that retail investors have written off.

Some think that a rally is currently in the making as well, since capital is spreading to other areas. The fact that meme coins are recording such strong performance has led most market researchers to believe that altcoins will definitely follow as well. In the past, the altcoin that benefited the most from such a shift has been Sol, since its blockchain is directly connected to the most significant concentration of meme coin transactions in the entire ecosystem.

The larger market environment

While all cryptocurrencies are individual assets, they are also interconnected and operate fairly similarly. Right now, even though the meme coins are performing really well, some have begun to wonder whether the same will happen in the larger ecosystem. Since the beginning of 2026, performance rates have been consistent but more subdued than many were imagining. However, the majority believe that optimism wouldn’t be misplaced at the moment. Data indicates that general sentiment is improving, meaning that the majority of traders are becoming increasingly confident.

The fear and greed index, a well-known metric that is widely used in order to determine the next step investors should take, has flipped to neutral this January, the first time it has done so since October. However, just because the market is performing more consistently doesn’t mean that you should become overly confident. Having a robust strategy remains paramount, and the choices you make need to be aligned with your long-term goals at all times.

What to expect from the future

Crypto predictions and estimations are the backbone of the ecosystem, as the volatility and fluctuations make many worry that they will make the wrong decisions when it comes to their portfolios. Blindly trusting predictions isn’t the way to go, though, as you should always determine whether a certain course of action is the right choice for you or not. The way in which you approach the market and the things you want to obtain should change your trading strategy as well.

However, predictions are valuable and can help you get a better idea of what to expect. 2026 is currently believed to be a good year for cryptocurrencies, one that will take prices to new all-time highs and record levels. Changes in regulatory landscapes are set to occur, leading to the markets becoming clearer to navigate as uncertainties evaporate. However, some issues might persist, as different jurisdictions approach digital tokens differently, potentially leading to problems with cross-border transactions.

The engagement rates from institutional investors will most likely remain stable as well, if not pick up speed, driving the market even further. Geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties will impact the market, though, so keeping up with the news is imperative over the next twelve months.

If you’re an investor, you should stick to your strategy at all times. Prioritize the well-being of your portfolio and long-term gains, but make sure to leave room for flexibility in case markets change. It’s the best way to be successful.
