Solana’s Agave 4.2 release is one of the network’s most significant performance upgrades of 2026. Recommended for broader mainnet adoption in August, the release introduces larger transactions, lower rent costs and faster slots while also laying the groundwork for the upcoming Alpenglow consensus overhaul.
Here are five changes that could have the biggest impact.
Agave 4.2 is designed to cut Solana’s slot time in half, from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds. The rollout is planned through four 50ms reductions rather than one immediate jump.
That could make confirmations roughly twice as fast while reducing the time any single leader controls block production. The network can pause the rollout if block skip rates become too high.
Solana is increasing the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, giving developers more than three times as much room.
Larger transactions could make complex operations such as ZK proofs, large multi-signature transactions and BLS-based signature schemes easier to execute atomically instead of splitting them across multiple transactions or lookup structures.
Another major change is a planned 90% reduction in rent, phased in over five steps. Solana’s upgrade tracker lists a target of 696 lamports per byte, down from 6,960.
Lower rent reduces the cost of maintaining on-chain state, which could make applications with large numbers of accounts cheaper to operate.
Agave 4.2 contains the code required to test Alpenglow, Solana’s next-generation consensus system, although it will not activate on mainnet in this release.
Alpenglow is expected in Agave 4.3, currently targeted for October 2026. It replaces TowerBFT with Votor and aims for roughly 150ms finality, compared with about 12.8 seconds under the current consensus model.
Agave 4.2 arrives after other major capacity improvements. Solana increased its block limit from 60 million to 100 million compute units, a 66% rise in theoretical block capacity.
Anza performance lead Alessandro Decina has also said Agave’s skip rate fell from roughly 33% to around 0.5% by version 2.3, showing how validator-client performance has improved before the 4.2 rollout.
