Overview:

  • Bitcoin is on track for its strongest August in nine years, with its Q3 2026 return currently standing at 32.48%.

  • Cronos halted block production following an estimated USD 75 million Tectonic exploit.

  • XRPL validators continued voting on XLS-65 and XLS-66 lending amendments.

The crypto market saw major developments as Bitcoin witnessed its strongest August in nine years, while Arbitrum activated the Elara upgrade. Also, Ripple minted 11 million XRP, and XRP Ledger's validators are voting on two amendments.

Strongest August for Bitcoin in 9 Years

Bitcoin is on track to wrap up this August with its strongest performance for the month in nine years

According to the historical performance, Bitcoin's third-quarter (Q3) return for 2026 currently stands at a robust 32.48%.

This has seemingly put an end to the bearish trend that dominated the first half of the year. The flagship cryptocurrency saw consecutive quarterly losses of 22.2% in Q1 and 14.09% in Q2.  The average Q3 return for Bitcoin is just 7.94%.

Arbitrum Activates Elara Upgrade

Arbitrum has activated its ArbOS 61 ‘Elara’ upgrade, adding optional compliance filtering for custom Orbit chains and expanding the size allowed for Stylus smart contracts.

The upgrade went live on August 20, according to information from Arbitrum and Offchain Labs cited by Bitcoinist.

Node operators must update to Nitro version 3.11.3 to support the release. Elara’s most closely watched feature is a protocol-level filtering option intended for operators of customized Arbitrum Orbit chains.

Cronos Halts Chain After Exploit

Cronos stopped block production after an estimated USD 75 million Tectonic exploit, trapping most suspected proceeds on-chain while unrelated users could no longer settle transactions across the network.

Cronos and Tectonic represent separate parts of the incident. Cronos is the Layer-1 network processing transactions, while Tectonic is a lending application built on it.

Stopping block production therefore suspended on-chain transfers, bridges, and smart-contract activity across the ecosystem, including services unrelated to Tectonic.

On-chain researcher Weilin Li initially estimated that approximately USD 66 million was involved. He later identified another suspected attacker-controlled address holding about USD 8 million and raised his estimate to roughly USD 75 million

Ripple Mints 11 Million XRP

Ripple recorded another round of RLUSD treasury activity on August 31, including an 11 million-token mint and a separate 11 million-token burn.

The transactions were reported by the Ripple Stablecoin Tracker. They followed several large operations on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum during the final days of August.

CoinGecko placed RLUSD’s circulating supply and market capitalization at approximately USD 2.37 billion on August 31.

The stablecoin continued trading close to its intended USD 1 peg, meaning supply growth rather than price appreciation drove the higher valuation.

XRP Ledger’s Lending Vote

XRP Ledger validators are voting on two amendments, XLS-65 and XLS-66, to add single-asset vaults and fixed-term lending to the protocol.

Support currently sits at about 34% and 37%, well below the >80% threshold required for activation and the two-week hold period the amendment must maintain.

Ripple’s validator voted in favor in August but cannot enact changes unilaterally. XLS-65 would create vaults pooling a single asset and issuing vault shares; XLS-66 would use pooled liquidity for fixed-term loans with off-chain underwriting, identity checks, and legal reviews.

FAQs:

1. How strong has Bitcoin performed in Q3 2026?

Bitcoin’s Q3 return currently stands at 32.48%, well above its historical average Q3 return of 7.94%. The move follows losses of 22.2% in Q1 and 14.09% in Q2.

2. What is Arbitrum’s Elara upgrade?

Elara is ArbOS 61, an Arbitrum upgrade that adds optional compliance filtering for custom Orbit chains and increases the size allowed for Stylus smart contracts. Node operators need Nitro version 3.11.3 to support it.

3. Why did Cronos stop block production?

Cronos halted the network after an exploit involving the Tectonic lending protocol was estimated at roughly USD 75 million. The halt prevented suspected funds from moving but also disrupted unrelated activity across the chain.

4. Did Ripple mint 11 million XRP?

The activity described involved RLUSD, not XRP. Ripple recorded an 11 million-token RLUSD mint and a separate 11 million-token burn on August 31, while RLUSD’s market capitalization stood near USD 2.37 billion.

5. What are XLS-65 and XLS-66 on XRP Ledger?

XLS-65 would introduce single-asset vaults, while XLS-66 would enable fixed-term lending using pooled liquidity and off-chain underwriting. Support remains below the more than 80% threshold required for activation.
