Can Bitcoin Survive a Global Internet Outage? How the Network Could Respond to Worldwide Connectivity Failure

Bitcoin is often described as decentralized infrastructure, but its nodes normally depend on internet connectivity to exchange transactions and blocks. A global internet outage would therefore create a serious operational problem, although it would not automatically erase Bitcoin or permanently destroy the network.

Bitcoin Exists Across Thousands of Independent Copies

Bitcoin's blockchain is replicated across independent nodes rather than stored on one central server. If ordinary internet connectivity disappeared globally, those copies would remain on computers and storage devices. Existing Bitcoin balances and historical transactions would therefore not simply vanish.

The immediate problem would be communication. Nodes unable to communicate could not reliably propagate transactions or maintain a synchronized global view of new blocks.
