Blockchain is best known for cryptocurrencies, but researchers in healthcare are using the technology to address a distinct problem: enabling healthcare providers, patients, laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies to authenticate data without relying on a single organization to maintain all records.
The prospects are enormous as current healthcare data continues to be dispersed among different service providers and systems. However, blockchain is better suited to verifying and coordinating data than to storing entire medical records directly on-chain.
Electronic health records are one of the most researched blockchain healthcare applications. A 2026 systematic review examined 2,692 research records and identified 16 empirical studies involving blockchain integration with electronic health records. Roughly 75% used permissioned or consortium blockchains, with Hyperledger Fabric the most common architecture.
Permissioned networks make sense for healthcare as hospitals generally cannot expose sensitive patient information on public blockchains.
Instead, medical files can remain encrypted in existing databases while hashes, permissions or verification records are stored on-chain. If someone alters the underlying information, its cryptographic fingerprint changes, making manipulation easier to detect.
Blockchain-based identity systems can potentially let patients decide which providers can access specific information. A patient moving between hospitals could authorize access without requiring every institution to maintain identical databases. Smart contracts could also automatically record when information was accessed and by whom.

Blockchain does not eliminate privacy requirements, however. Patient information still needs encryption, access controls and compliance with healthcare and data-protection laws.
Counterfeit medicine and fragmented supply-chain records create another opportunity. A blockchain can create a shared record as medicines move between manufacturers, distributors, hospitals and pharmacies. Each participant can verify where a product originated and whether earlier records have been changed.
WHO has emphasized scalable digital health supply-chain architecture as countries modernize pharmaceutical distribution systems.
The same approach could help track vaccines, medical equipment and temperature-sensitive products.
Researchers could timestamp trial protocols, consent records and results using blockchain. That would not prove that the scientific findings are correct, but it could establish when information existed and whether records were subsequently modified.
Insurance is another potential application. Smart contracts could automate parts of claims processing once predefined conditions are verified.
Blockchain will not replace hospital databases. Its more practical role may be creating a trusted verification layer connecting systems that currently struggle to share information.
The strongest healthcare applications are therefore likely to involve interoperability, provenance, patient permissions and audit trails rather than putting confidential medical records directly onto public chains.
