Binance vs Kraken: Fees, Features and Crypto Trading Options Compared for Different Types of Investors in 2026

Binance and Kraken are two major global cryptocurrency exchanges, but their pricing models and product strategies differ considerably. Binance generally focuses on low trading costs and a broad crypto ecosystem, while Kraken combines spot, margin and derivatives trading with a tiered fee structure.

Which platform offers better value depends largely on trading volume, account holdings, preferred products and jurisdiction.

Binance Starts with Lower Spot Fees

Binance currently charges regular users a standard 0.10% maker fee and 0.10% taker fee for spot trading. Users paying trading fees with BNB can receive a 25% discount, reducing both rates to 0.075%.

Fees decline for higher-volume customers. At VIP 3, for example, Binance currently lists maker and taker fees of 0.04% and 0.06%, respectively, before the BNB discount.

Kraken Uses a Different Tier Structure

The maker and taker fees for the lowest level of Kraken Pro start at 0.40% and 0.80%, respectively. However, the fees are lower as users qualify for higher tiers.

Kraken changed its fee structure in July 2026. A customer's tier can now be determined by spot trading volume or assets on the platform, whichever provides the better rate. In eligible markets, futures trading volume can also contribute toward fee-tier qualification.

For instance, customers reaching USD 250,000 in 30-day spot volume, or USD 400,000 in qualifying assets, can access a 0.10% maker and 0.22% taker rate.

Features Go Beyond Spot Trading

Binance offers spot and margin trading, futures, options, staking-related products, trading bots and peer-to-peer services alongside a broad selection of crypto assets.

Kraken provides spot and margin markets, staking, derivatives in eligible jurisdictions and services aimed at institutional customers. Product availability differs by country as regulatory requirements can restrict leverage, staking or derivatives access.

Security and Custody Matter Too

Keeping cryptocurrency on a centralized exchange creates counterparty risk as customers depend on the platform's custody and withdrawal infrastructure rather than exclusively controlling their own private keys.

Trading fees are also only one expense. Withdrawal charges, spreads, network costs and slippage can affect the total cost of buying or moving cryptocurrency.

Which Exchange is Better?

For low-volume spot traders focused primarily on fees, Binance's standard 0.10% rate remains substantially below Kraken Pro's 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker starting rates.

Kraken becomes more competitive as customers move through its tiers, particularly after its 2026 changes that allow qualifying asset balances to reduce trading fees.

Why this Matters
Exchange comparisons should consider more than headline fees. Liquidity, custody, withdrawals, regulatory availability and supported products can materially affect costs and risk, meaning the cheapest exchange may not necessarily provide the best overall experience for every crypto trader.

Final Thoughts

Binance currently offers lower entry-level spot fees, while Kraken rewards larger trading volumes and qualifying platform balances. The better choice ultimately depends on trading frequency, required features, jurisdiction and custody preferences rather than fees.
