Key Takeaways -

  • Fees: Binance offers lower standard spot fees, while Kraken can become highly competitive for large accounts.

  • Features: Binance provides a broader crypto product and derivatives ecosystem, while Kraken has significantly expanded its offerings.

  • Choice: Your trading volume, preferred products, security priorities, and country determine which exchange is more suitable.

A low fee can look like the clear winner, yet crypto exchange costs depend on more than one rate. Binance starts at 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker for a regular spot user. Using BNB when eligible can cut both rates to 0.075%. Kraken starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker on its main spot schedule. Kraken, however, changed its fee model in a major way in July 2026.

Binance Keeps a Strong Cost Edge

Binance offers spot, margin, USDⓈ-M futures, COIN-M futures, TradFi futures, options, P2P, Web3 services and more. A regular user below USD 1 million in 30-day trade volume has a 0.100% maker rate and a 0.100% taker rate. VIP 1 starts at USD 1 million in 30-day trade volume plus at least 5 BNB, with a 0.090% maker rate and a 0.100% taker rate. VIP 3 reaches 0.040% maker and 0.060% taker.

The BNB discount cuts the regular maker and taker rates to 0.075%. Binance also has a large futures system, with lower rates at higher VIP levels. This fee structure gives Binance a clear cost advantage for many smaller and mid-size spot trades.

Kraken Gives Large Accounts More Fee Options

Kraken changed its fee tiers on July 9, 2026. The new system checks spot volume, futures volume and assets on the platform, then applies the metric that gives the best tier. Tier 1 starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker for spot crypto. Tier 7 reaches 0.10% maker and 0.22% taker. Tier 12 reaches 0% maker and 0.10% taker. Pro 5 reaches 0% maker and 0.05% taker.

Kraken futures start at 0.0200% maker and 0.0500% taker, while Pro 5 reaches -0.006% maker and 0.0125% taker. The new structure gives large accounts more ways to lower fees. A trader with high futures volume or large assets on Kraken can now qualify for a better tier without relying only on spot trade volume.

Binance Offers a Wider Crypto Product Range

Binance remains the broader choice for traders who want many crypto products. The exchange supports spot markets, margin, futures, options, copy trade, bots, Earn products, P2P, Web3 services and Binance Pay. Futures offer USDⓈ-M and COIN-M contracts, with leverage up to about 125× on eligible products and regions.

Kraken has closed part of that gap. Kraken now has more than 260 margin-enabled markets and a broad perpetual futures range. Kraken has also expanded crypto options, with USD-settled Bitcoin and Ether options. Eligible users can access up to 100× leverage on Bitcoin and Ether perpetuals.

Kraken also offers more than 2,500 Solana tokens through its app in the United States and more than 100 other countries. That gives the exchange a stronger position in on-chain crypto markets than older comparisons suggest.

Derivatives Create a Clear Split

Binance has the stronger case for a large crypto derivatives menu. Its menu covers futures, perpetual contracts and options across many assets. The lower base fees also suit short-term strategies where frequent trades can create a large total fee bill.

Kraken has a different strength. Its derivatives range has grown fast, and its product set covers regulated market products in some regions. Kraken says its futures platform has more than 300 perpetual markets. Kraken also has an edge for eligible U.S. customers, since Binance's global futures products do not serve U.S. residents.

Security and Rules Matter Alongside Fees

Both exchanges use Proof of Reserves. Binance also has the Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, as an emergency fund. Kraken stresses security, transparency and regulatory access. Proof of Reserves offers useful evidence about asset coverage, but it does not remove every exchange or custody risk.

Regulation changes product access across countries. Kraken has pursued MiCA authorization in Europe, while Binance has changed parts of its European structure as the MiCA framework takes effect. Binance Italy, for example, ceased its activities from July 1, 2026, as part of that transition.

The Better Choice Depends on the Trade

Binance has the stronger case for low standard spot fees, a broad crypto asset range and a large derivatives menu. Kraken has the stronger case for a fee model that now rewards spot volume, futures volume and platform assets, along with a strong focus on regulation and transparency.

For a smaller active spot trader, Binance offers the clearer price advantage. For a high-volume account, Kraken can narrow the gap and reach very low rates. For derivatives, Binance still leads on breadth, while Kraken offers a serious alternative with strong futures growth and regulated-market access in selected regions.

The final cost can also depend on spread, perpetual contract rates, withdrawal costs, conversion charges, margin rates and local product access. A 0.10% fee can lose its edge if another charge adds more cost. The best exchange depends on the exact market, product and country tied to the account.
