ChatGPT Space Explained: A New Way to Organize AI Workflows

ChatGPT Space creates a central workspace for files, Pages, shared context, ChatGPT, Codex, and Dots, giving AI-supported projects a more organized and persistent home.

Key Takeaways -

  • Persistent workspace: Spaces keeps related files, Pages, folders, and project context together in one place.

  • AI agents: Dots can handle ongoing goals, work with Space files, use connected apps, and return when human decisions matter.

  • Collaborative work: Spaces supports shared Pages, comments, edits, ChatGPT, and Dots, while additional Slides and Sheets features remain on the roadmap.

ChatGPT Space marks a major shift in how OpenAI wants ChatGPT to support real work. A Space acts as a persistent home for related tasks, files, Pages, and shared context. Instead of keeping related work across separate chats, a Space can hold the material, tools and context tied to one project or goal. OpenAI now places Spaces at the center of a broader system that also includes Pages, Codex, connected apps, and Dots, its newer always-on agents.

The change matters for people who use ChatGPT for more than quick questions. A Space can serve as a central work area where documents stay together and AI can help with tasks across that material. OpenAI says Spaces support Pages, files, folders, nested pages, shared work, charts, trackers, and interactive tools. Connected services can also supply content, subject to the permissions tied to each service.

Spaces Put Related Work in One Place

A Space does more than store chats. A Page inside a Space can act as a living document that ChatGPT can revise, expand, or restructure. A conversation can also become the base for a new Page. For example, a website launch plan can become a structured page with goals, a timeline, tasks, and next steps.

That setup creates a clear difference between a Space and a Project. Projects still exist as a separate ChatGPT feature for chats, files, and project-specific instructions. OpenAI says a Space does not replace Projects.

Instead, Spaces offer a broader work environment that can hold Pages, files, folders, and shared material. OpenAI also says Spaces replace Library for accounts that have access to the feature.

Pages add another layer to the system. A Page can hold research, notes, plans, charts, trackers, and other work products. ChatGPT can make changes to a Page after a request, which allows the document to develop along with the project.

OpenAI has also described a feature called ‘Keep updated,’ which could help pages stay current through connected tools. The Help Center, however, says automatic page updates were not available at launch, so that part remains subject to rollout status.

Dots Add a New Role for AI Agents

The most notable part of Spaces may come from Dots. OpenAI introduced Dots at DevDay 2026 as always-on agents that can take responsibility for ongoing goals. A Dot can work with connected applications, use files, retain context, and return for a decision when human input matters.

Spaces give those agents a stable place to work. OpenAI says Dots can work with files inside a Space and can help keep Pages current as plans change. That creates a different model from a standard chat. A normal chat answers and ends. A Space can hold the context, while a Dot can handle tasks across that context over time.

OpenAI’s broader agent strategy follows the same direction. Workspace Agents can handle complex, multi-step tasks, use connected tools, retain context, and continue work in the cloud. Spaces fit into that system as the context and work layer for such agents.

The distinction between automation and autonomy matters here. A scheduled task can run at a set time. An autonomous agent can handle a larger goal, use tools, adjust its actions, and ask for a decision when needed. Spaces provide a place for that type of work to stay organized.

Current Access and What Comes Next

OpenAI’s current documentation lists Spaces for Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. Web and desktop support Space creation and editing, while mobile supports access and sharing. Mobile Pages do not yet support full editing. OpenAI also lists collaborative Slides and Sheets as upcoming capabilities.

Collaboration forms another major part of the feature. People can view, comment, edit, and work on Pages together. Space members can also mention ChatGPT or a Dot inside shared work. Business and Enterprise accounts have a separate Teams concept. A team represents people, while a Space holds shared content and context. One team can access several Spaces, while a Space can support several teams.

The rollout still has limits. Automatic ‘Keep updated’ page refreshes were not available at launch, and some features remain on the roadmap. OpenAI’s status page also reported elevated errors for ChatGPT Space Pages on October 1, 2026, with mitigation in place and recovery under observation.

Spaces therefore represent more than a new folder system. The feature connects persistent documents, files, human collaboration, ChatGPT, Codex, and AI agents inside one workspace. The larger shift points toward ChatGPT as a place where projects can live, change, and gain AI support over time rather than remain as isolated conversations.
