Instant Checkout lets users browse, buy, and pay securely directly within ChatGPT’s chat interface.
The Agentic Commerce Protocol ensures encrypted transactions, verification, and seamless communication between AI and merchants.
Open-source ACP and expanding merchant support make ChatGPT a scalable, efficient, and trusted AI shopping assistant.
More than 700 million people use ChatGPT each week to assist with everyday tasks. To simplify online shopping, an Instant Checkout feature has been introduced, powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol in collaboration with Stripe. In the United States, users of ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, and Pro editions can now make purchases directly from Etsy sellers within the chat interface.
Integration with a million Shopify retailers, including notable brands such as Glossier and Spanx, is planned for the near future. Initially, the feature supports single-item purchases, but upcoming updates will enable multi-item carts and expand availability to more merchants and regions.
As the Agentic Commerce Protocol is open source, companies and developers can adopt it to create AI-driven commerce experiences, aiming to deliver a seamless shopping journey. This protocol enhances sellers’ reach while improving convenience for buyers. Starting today, merchants can apply to participate and complete the necessary registration process.
Users can browse items, select them, review their cart, and complete purchases within the interface, a process made seamless by Instant Checkout.
ChatGPT shows a ‘Buy’ button when users prompt the model to recommend products. Examples include the request for ‘best running shoes under $100’ or ‘gift ideas for someone who loves ceramics.’
After completing checkout, customers receive a confirmation to review before completing the transaction. The order is shipped and fulfilled through the merchants. ChatGPT functions as a secure intermediary in the transaction.
The service is free for consumers, has no bearing on their prices, and has no effect on ChatGPT's product results. Merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases. Instant Checkout products are not prioritized in product results.
To optimize the user experience, ChatGPT ranks merchants selling the same product based on criteria such as availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled.

The foundation of this experience is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (opens in a new window), which offers the language that enables companies and AI agents to collaborate to finish a user's transaction.
Together with Stripe, OpenAI developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol, enabling merchants to:
Work with different payment processors, platforms, and business models.
Swiftly integrate without modifying their backend systems.
Merchants maintain control over the client connection by serving as the merchant of record throughout the duration of the purchase process, from fulfillment and returns to support and communication.
The Instant Checkout system and the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) work together to provide an easy and secure purchasing experience within ChatGPT. When a user clicks on the 'Buy' button within chat, ‘Instant Checkout’ kicks off the purchasing process by gathering product details, shipping information, and payment account information.
The ACP operates behind this process and serves as the communication and authorization layer among the user, the AI, and the merchant. The ACP securely encrypts sensitive information, verifies payment authorization with Stripe, and routes the order to the merchant for fulfillment.
Instant Checkout provides the user-facing shopping experience, while the ACP automates communication and verification processes, ensuring transactions are secure and efficient, allowing ChatGPT to function as a safe, AI shopping assistant.

ChatGPT's ‘Buy It’ feature allows the AI to function as a seamless shopping assistant, merging Instant Checkout with the Agentic Commerce Protocol to streamline purchases and provide a secure transaction.
Consumers can search, order, and pay directly within the chat interface, while merchants retain full control over fulfillment and customer service. By open-sourcing ACP, OpenAI is likely to boost the adoption of shopping carts and enable numerous platforms to implement AI-driven commerce.
Additional support for merchants and multi-item carts is coming soon, further solidifying ChatGPT as a reliable, easy-to-use, and scalable solution for the next generation of e-commerce.

ACP is an open-source protocol that facilitates secure, automated interaction between AI, merchants, and users. It protects sensitive data, confirms payments, and directs orders securely, allowing ChatGPT to process in-chat purchases securely.
4. Who Can Make Use of the Buy It Feature?
As of now, ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro users in the United States can purchase from participating Etsy sellers. Shopify support and broader region support are on the roadmap for future releases.
5. Are There Any Additional Charges to Users?
No. Customers pay the stated product prices without extra charges. Merchants only pay a tiny transaction fee. Product rankings are still impartial, and Instant Checkout has no influence on ChatGPT's product suggestions.
