Writers to AI Firms: Stop Stealing Our Work

Writers demand fair compensation from AI for using their work

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as understanding language, generating text, recognizing images, and making decisions. AI has many applications and benefits in various fields, such as education, health, entertainment, and business. However, AI also poses some ethical and legal challenges, especially when using copyrighted works without permission or compensation.

One of the most popular and powerful AI tools is ChatGPT, a chatbot that can generate text for various purposes, such as writing stories, essays, emails, or tweets. ChatGPT is developed by OpenAI, a research organization that aims to create artificial general intelligence (AGI), a level of AI that can perform any intellectual task that a human can. ChatGPT is trained by copying large amounts of text from the internet and extracting information from it. However, this process involves using millions of copyrighted books, articles, essays, and poems without the consent or credit of the original authors.

This practice has sparked outrage and protest from thousands of writers who have signed an open letter asking AI companies like OpenAI and Meta (formerly Facebook) to stop using their work without permission or compensation. The letter, published by the Authors Guild, the largest professional organization for writers in the United States, is addressed to the CEOs of OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google's parent company), IBM, and Stability AI. The letter presents three demands to these companies:

Obtain permission for use of our copyrighted material.

Compensate writers fairly for the past and ongoing use of our works.

Compensate writers fairly for the use of our works in AI output.

The letter has been endorsed by more than 8,500 writers, including prominent authors such as Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Franzen, James Patterson, Suzanne Collins, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Philip Pullman, Jodi Picoult, Michael Pollan, and Nora Roberts. The letter states that "the introduction of AI threatens to tip the scale to make it even more difficult, if not impossible, for writers – especially young writers and voices from underrepresented communities – to earn a living from their profession." The letter also argues that "AI regurgitates what it takes in, which is the work of human writers" and that "it is only fair that authors be compensated for having 'fed' AI and continuing to inform its evolution."

The letter is the latest in a series of actions by writers and artists to protect their rights and interests from AI exploitation. In October 2022, two US authors, Paul Tremblay, and Mona Awad, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for allegedly using their works to train and test ChatGPT without their permission. In November 2022, three artists sued Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt for allegedly using their images to train AI tools without their consent. In December 2022, thousands of Hollywood actors and writers went on strike over various issues, including the role of AI in filmmaking.

These cases highlight the need for clear and fair regulations and guidelines for using copyrighted works in AI development and deployment. They also raise questions about AI companies' and researchers' accountability, transparency, and responsibility. Moreover, they show the importance of respecting and rewarding the creativity, originality, and diversity of human writers and artists in the age of AI.

In conclusion, thousands of writers have demanded that AI companies stop using their work without permission or compensation. They have signed an open letter asking these companies to obtain permission, pay fair compensation, and respect their rights and interests. They have also expressed their concerns about the impact of AI on their profession and culture. They have joined other writers and artists who have taken legal or collective actions against AI exploitation. They have called for more ethical and legal standards and safeguards for using copyrighted works in AI.
