World Backup Day 2025: How Crucial is Data Restore in This AI-Driven Era?

World Backup Day is approaching, highlighting the necessity of data restoration

Written By : Antara

March 31 is recognized as World Backup Day. This specific day serves as a reminder of the importance of backing up data and protecting it from theft and loss. As World Backup Day is officially here, in an era dominated by AI and complex IT infrastructures, it is again time for the organizations and individuals to rethink their backup strategies.

Backing up data has long been an essential part of cybersecurity, but in recent times, the real challenge lies in restoring information in case of cyber threats or unforeseen disruptions. So, here’s what experts have said about data restoration in this AI era.

The Evolution from Data Backup to Restore in the AI Era

As the Asia-Pacific and Japan regions have been embracing artificial intelligence in massive numbers, the approach of organizations toward data protection has also changed. Addressing this part, Pure Storage’s Vice President and General Manager for Asia Pacific & Japan, Nathan Hall, has mentioned that in this age of cyber crimes, backing up data is not enough. Therefore, organizations must stress restoring data.

Talking about this, he further brings an example of Singapore’s Enterprise Compute Initiative and mentions that Kroll’s 2025 Financial Crime Report has already noted that 82% of senior management in the region expect an increase in financial crime in 2025.

Hall emphasizes that data loss is not only a minor setback, but its implications are much wider than that. As per him, “Data loss is not just an inconvenience — it can severely damage trust, cripple productivity, and compromise compliance.”

Amit Luthra, managing director of Lenovo ISG India, almost repeated the same words about data security. While talking about Lenovo’s strategies to fight data leaks, he stated, “In an era where AI adoption accelerates and IT infrastructures grow increasingly complex, ensuring seamless data availability and resilience has become paramount. Cyber threats, system failures, and stringent compliance mandates necessitate robust backup and disaster recovery strategies—not merely as safeguards, but as business imperatives.”

Further emphasizing his point, he revealed, “Lenovo's ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile solutions are meticulously engineered to meet these evolving demands. They provide secure, scalable, and AI-ready infrastructure that ensures continuous data protection.”

Implementing Effective Data Backup and Restoration Strategies

This World Backup Day once again reminded users about protecting their data from cyber criminals. To talk about this, Amit Luthra mentioned, “As AI workloads expand exponentially, enterprises require intelligent systems capable of not only storing and processing vast data volumes but also safeguarding against disruptions.”

To elaborate on Lenovo’s data security system, he revealed, “Our backup and disaster recovery solutions integrate advanced automation and cyber resilience, facilitating rapid recovery and maintaining operational continuity. For instance, the integration of Lenovo ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile solutions helps mitigate ransomware attacks by keeping backups secure in immutable repositories, enabling swift and effective restoration of compromised data.”

In his opinion, “A modern backup strategy transcends mere recovery; it embodies proactive resilience.” Therefore, while stating his views on World Backup Day, he mentioned that, per him, AI advancement and data security must evolve together to keep the balance. So, he concluded his opinion saying, “A modern backup strategy transcends mere recovery; it embodies proactive resilience. This World Backup Day serves as a reminder that data protection must evolve in tandem with the technologies driving digital transformation. By adopting future-ready infrastructure and intelligent backup solutions, enterprises can mitigate risks, enhance security, and ensure that data remains their most reliable asset in an AI-driven world.”

Conclusion

World Backup Day started with a Reddit post where a user reported about his data loss and highlighted the significance of someone reminding him to keep a backup of the data. However, with the rapid growth of AI, the backup thing isn’t enough anymore, but a seamless recovery is also important. So, organizations must evolve their policies and adopt technologies that will safeguard their digital assets against emerging threats.
