Marking its everlasting impression in various directions, AI now chooses to beneficiate ship navigation system through improved voyage planning and navigation safety. The technology is making ship navigation more intelligent without eliminating human involvement from the process.
The initiative is undertaken to lessen the burden on administrative people on bridge teams. The technology has been adopted for the e-navigation process which will allow officers to enhance their focus on secure navigation.
This new ship navigation system comprises of IoT, ML and cloud computing technology advising navigators regarding ocean environment, potential hazards and performance of the ship. All this is done under the umbrella of a cyber-secure system to facilitate route planning and voyage execution.
Wartsila-acquired Transas adopted AI with hazard identification for its fresh Navi-Planner voyage planning and optimization solution. The solution employs artificial intelligence to automatically generate safe navigation routes through latest ENC (electronic navigation chart) and notice to mariners. Further, the optimization of routes is done against weather forecasts and possible hazards.
While cutting time-consuming work from bridge operations, Navi-Planners' electronic charts automatically update with the latest navigation notices. The process also benefits fleet managers as onshore operators are capable of remotely supervising their vessels in real-time.
Wartsila will be constantly adding functionalities to Navi-Planner for navigators to optimize routes. Also shortly, information like port arrival data could be incorporated into the navigation plans. Navi-Planner will be able to adjust the route and speed to the port, based on the recommended time of arrival. It will also employ accurate speed information and connectivity with ports to optimize voyages in smarter ways by lowering carbon-dioxide emissions or reduce fuel consumption without hammering secure navigation.
The AI has the power to offer 100 percent success rate but is limited to the scope of data it was fed, which significantly means the systems need to gather a huge dataset for smooth function of the solution. Additionally, certain researchers have assured that combination of AI with navigation analytics provides an additional touch of security to marine management.
