Q3 State of AI for SaaS and AI-Native Startups: Only 9 of 23 Predictions Held Up

Written By : IndustryTrends

October, 2026 - For two years, research firms, investors and AI labs told SaaS founders where AI would take software. Those predictions shaped pricing decisions, hiring plans and fundraising pitches. Relve’s Q3 2026 report,  The State of AI for SaaS and AI-Native Startups, checks 23 of them against what actually happened. Only 9 held true.

Two years is long enough to judge. Several predictions named dates that have now arrived or are close, and Relve has three quarters of its own tracking to measure them against. The point is not to grade the firms. Most of these calls were reasonable when they were made. The point is to show founders which assumptions in their own plans still hold.

The predictions come from 12 firms founders hear from most: Menlo, Bessemer, Bain, BCG, IBM, Gartner, Deloitte, PwC, Sequoia, a16z, OpenAI and Anthropic. Each one received one of six verdicts, from Right to Underestimated, backed by research from McKinsey, Stanford and Capgemini.

The industry was right about direction and wrong about pace. Some calls landed almost exactly. Others assumed a schedule the data does not support, and a plan built on the wrong timing burns the runway. The report shows which predictions are safe to build on and which still need a hedge.

Three predictions show the range:

PredictionWhoVerdictWhat happened
AI will slow SaaS growthBainRightSaaS revenue growth halved
AI will write 90% of code within six monthsAnthropicOverestimatedReview time rose 91% while output rose 21%
40% of enterprise apps will carry agents by end of 2026GartnerBehindNo agent development reached a Signal in Q3

The same gap shows up in the quarter’s news. Relve tracked 458 AI developments in Q3, up 152% on Q2. Only 8 changed how a SaaS company builds, hires, budgets or buys. Relve calls these Signals, and they fell from 29 in Q2.

The rest was Watch, real shifts still forming, or Noise, real news that asks nothing of a founder. The report shows where those 8 Signals came from, and it is rarely where the headlines pointed. It also names the Watch themes closest to becoming the next ones.

Relve also reviewed 61 AI and tech events, 135% more than in Q2. The report explains what that count revealed, and which Q4 dates founders should hold.

The money told its own story. Relve counted 32 closed equity rounds worth about $9.8B, and most of it went to very few companies. The report breaks every round down by size and by layer, names who bought whom, and points to one large financing that never made the raises total.

Relve also added 1,340 AI tools to its platform in Q3. The report sorts them by category, pricing model and funding, and counts how many were built on AI from the start.

Then there is the “SaaS is dead” debate. The pressure on SaaS is real and measurable, but the data tells a different story from the headlines. The report shows which products lose renewals first, which are hardest to replace, how pricing is changing, and what investors, including Y Combinator, now want to fund.

The report also answers:

  • Which firms’ predictions held up best, and which missed?

  • Which prediction did the industry make too small?

  • What did no prediction see coming?

  • Is being acquired now a realistic exit for a smaller AI startup?

  • What is the one move most teams can start this week?

It is written for founders of early-stage and Series A AI and SaaS startups, and their teams across engineering, operations, HR, marketing and creative. Each finding ends with what it means for a company of that size, and the report sets out moves to make now, over the next two quarters, and by 2027. It is the latest in Relve’s quarterly AI reports, which use the same method each quarter so changes can be compared over time.

“Every prediction asked what AI will be able to do,” Relve said. “Founders need a different question. What should I build today that will still matter when AI gets dramatically better?”

About Relve:

Relve is an AI intelligence platform for founders and teams at SaaS and AI-native startups. It sorts AI developments by consequence, ranks tools by data, and briefs each team on what to act on.
