Meta AI has witnessed rapid growth in India within just a year of its launch. Sandhya Devanathan, Vice President at Meta, revealed at the Razorpay FTX '25 event in Bengaluru that the AI tool now serves over 700 million users worldwide on platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. As Meta’s largest market, India showcases diverse use cases, reflecting the country’s strong embrace of AI technology.
India is among the largest countries using Meta AI. Devanathan noted that the range of use cases in the country has been surprising. The company remains committed to open-source development, which is central to its AI strategy. But why India exactly?
Meta AI first launched in India in June 2024. Currently, India is Meta’s largest market. Meta AI is powered by Llama 3, a large language model developed by Meta. Founder Mark Zuckerberg released Llama as an open-source AI model in July. Since then, multiple versions have been downloaded over 650 million times.
Meta has provided over a thousand datasets and models to researchers, developers, and academic institutions. Open-source collaboration has helped the company improve AI tools. This approach has also reduced inference costs over time.
Meta recently introduced Llama Stack. This tool allows developers to create agentic tools using Llama. The company aims to support businesses in building AI-driven solutions.
More than 4 million businesses have used at least one of Meta’s generative AI products. These tools assist in image creation, creative testing, and other applications. The company is working to expand AI adoption across industries.
Just recently also, Meta announced a major investment in global digital infrastructure. A new 50,000 km subsea cable network that will connect the US, India, Brazil, South Africa and several other regions. This initiative aims to improve high-speed connectivity for activities directly related to AI development and growth in India.
In October, Meta partnered with IndiaAI at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The collaboration also focuses on open-source AI innovation, research and skill development. Therefore, through these several developments and many others, the company is committed to advancing AI technology in India.
