Romance scams have shifted from online dating scams to sophisticated and precise cybercrime campaigns driven by artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies. AI is being used to automate conversations, generate convincing fake identities, and target vulnerable individuals at scale, while cryptocurrencies facilitate near-instant, cross-border transfers that are difficult to reverse. As a result, this has turned the one-on-one scam into a global and industrialized fraud system.
Traditionally, romance scams relied on people building trust over weeks or months before asking for money. These days, AI has lowered the barrier to entry.
With AI-generated profile pictures, cloned voices, and even deepfake video calls, scammers can make a convincing fake identity. The use of large language models (LLMs) can also automate conversations, enabling fraudsters to engage thousands of victims at once and craft messages to address their individual moods and preferences.
Chainalysis reports that AI-powered cryptocurrency scams resulted in four times as much revenue as traditional scams in 2025. Additionally, fraudsters using AI technology engaged in 35.1 transactions per day, while conventional scammers engaged in only 3.89 transactions per day.
After gaining the victims' trust, victims are often encouraged to invest in cryptocurrency through fake trading platforms, a tactic widely known as 'pig butchering.'
According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), cryptocurrency-related fraud caused over $11 billion in losses in 2025, making crypto investment scams one of the largest sources of online financial crime. Reported losses from AI-assisted scams accounted for almost $893 million.
Stablecoins have also helped the scams by removing the volatility factor, meaning that criminals can transfer stolen funds without losing their value.

Romance scams are successful as they are an emotional scam. AARP's 2026 study found almost one out of every 10 adults over 50 said they had been asked to send money or get involved in cryptocurrency investments via online romance.
Adults between the ages of 50 and 64 were over twice as likely to be victims of these scams as adults aged 65 and over. Also, 55% of the victims have not reported the crime, most likely as they are embarrassed or feel shame.
Governments and tech companies are introducing stronger safeguards. The Romance Scam Prevention Act and the SCAM Act are proposed bills in the US that aim to enhance platform accountability and user protection. Dating platforms have also launched identification verification features, while financial institutions increasingly use AI to detect suspicious transactions before funds are transferred.
AI tools and crypto make modern online scams far more convincing, but staying safe comes down to simple precautions. Always double-check investment platforms on your own, don't move chats to private messaging apps at a stranger's request, and ignore anyone offering guaranteed returns.
