Claude is now available inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides through a single Workspace add-on.
The beta can draft, edit, analyze data, build models and improve presentations while keeping changes in version history.
Access controls, approval prompts and current feature limits give users control over how Claude works in Workspace.
Artificial intelligence has slowly moved out of separate chat windows and into the tools people already use every day. Most office work happens inside spreadsheets, documents and slide decks, not inside a standalone AI app. Anthropic has noticed this shift and has now placed Claude directly inside Google Workspace, the suite millions of businesses rely on daily.
On October 6, 2026, Anthropic launched a Claude add-on for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides in public beta. The add-on sits inside each open file as a sidebar, reading the document and editing it on command.
This marks a clear step in Anthropic's push to compete with Microsoft Copilot and Google's own Gemini inside everyday productivity apps.
The add-on installs once and adds a Claude panel inside Docs, Sheets and Slides. A single install covers all three apps, so there is no separate setup for each one. Users sign in with a Claude account, including single sign-on where an organization uses it.
Key points on access and rollout:
Available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise Claude plans.
Individual users install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace themselves, if permitted.
Super admins can install it for an entire organization, specific groups or units.
Admins can also allowlist the add-on so employees install it on their own.
Whether a person can install it depends on Workspace Marketplace settings, not the Claude plan alone.
Separately, Claude's chat interface also connects to Google files through connectors. A user can paste a link to a Google file, or ask Claude to create a new one, without opening the sidebar at all.
Each app gets a focused set of abilities, built around the kind of work that app is used for.
Docs: Drafts, rewrites and restructures long documents. It can also propose changes as cards, which a user accepts or rejects one at a time.
Sheets: Builds financial and data models, writes and fixes formulas, and cleans up messy data ranges.
Slides: Creates new slides, tightens existing ones, restyles whole decks and adds charts to presentations.
Across all three apps, Claude can answer questions about the open file and cite exactly where each answer came from. Every edit it makes is recorded under the user's name in File > Version History, allowing users to undo changes or restore an earlier version.
Users can attach up to 20 reference files per message, with a 30 MB limit per document and 10 MB per image. Web search is available but switched off by default, and a model picker lets users choose which Claude model handles the task.

Claude only reads the open file and the text a user has selected. It cannot see other files in Drive, Gmail or Calendar unless an organization separately enables connectors.
Two modes control how edits happen:
Ask before edits (default): Claude describes each action and waits for the user to click "Allow" before making it.
Accept all edits: Claude applies ordinary content edits right away, without pausing for approval each time.
Even in the faster mode, certain actions always need manual sign-off. Inserting web images, adding links, entering web addresses or changing file access trigger a "Security review" prompt, with no option to always allow them.
Claude also cannot share a file, change its ownership or access, build menus or automations, or load arbitrary web pages on its own. Every change still lands in version history, so a user can undo or restore an earlier version at any point.
As a public beta, the add-on carries real constraints that teams should weigh before relying on it.
Works only on the open file, with no PDF export or direct downloads from the sidebar.
The sidebar must stay open for Claude to keep working on a task.
Supported browsers are limited to Chrome, Edge and Safari; Firefox is not supported.
Voice dictation is not available, and tasks stop automatically after six minutes.
In Docs, Claude cannot read, reply to or resolve comments, or handle suggested edits.
It also cannot create, rename or reorder tabs within a document.
In Sheets, it cannot touch Connected Sheets tabs linked to BigQuery, or build triggers and custom menus.
In Slides, charts it creates are static images and will not refresh when source data changes.
Long or complex jobs should be broken into smaller steps, given the six-minute limit on each operation.
Claude's arrival inside Google Workspace shows how seriously Anthropic treats everyday office work, not only coding and research. Anthropic has also built in clear privacy safeguards.
Inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's systems within 30 days, while content from the extension is not used to train Claude. Enterprise customers get compliance APIs and audit export, though features such as zero data retention and HIPAA support are not yet available here.
For now, the add-on remains a beta product, and its limits on comments, tabs and chart refreshes are real ones teams will notice quickly. Even so, a tool that drafts, edits and explains work inside the files people already use marks a genuine step forward. Millions of Workspace users now have another serious AI option sitting right where their work happens.
When did Claude launch inside Google Workspace?
Anthropic released the Claude add-on for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides in public beta on October 6, 2026. It adds a sidebar that reads open files and edits them directly, without leaving the app.
Which Claude plans support the Google Workspace add-on?
The add-on works on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Installation also depends on whether a Google Workspace administrator allows Marketplace apps, since that setting controls access separately from the subscription itself.
Can Claude access files outside the open one?
No. Claude reads only the open file and the selected text inside it. It cannot see other Drive files, Gmail or Calendar unless an organization has separately enabled connectors or Drive access.
Does Claude replace Google's own AI features in Workspace?
No. Anthropic's add-on works alongside Gemini and other built-in Workspace tools. It gives users a second AI option inside the same files, rather than removing or replacing Google's existing assistant features.
What are the biggest limitations of this beta release?
Operations stop after six minutes, so large tasks need staging. Firefox is not supported, voice dictation is missing, and Slides charts stay static images that will not refresh with updated spreadsheet data.
