On Tuesday, Apple introduced the most comprehensive set of iPhone updates since the 10th anniversary of the iPhone X in 2017. The biggest model in the Pro series, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, received the most changes, as usual. These are my initial thoughts after seeing it for the first time in the Steve Jobs Theatre following the Cupertino Apple Event.
Although there are several reasons to upgrade, the iPhone 15 Pro Max significantly changes this year's Pro Max redesign. Let's examine the ones affecting an iPhone user's daily life the most.
One of the standout features of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the new Action button, a concept borrowed from the Apple Watch Ultra. This versatile button, customizable with seven different sets of functions, offers quick access to various tasks. By default, it functions as a mute button, silencing your smartphone. However, you can easily configure it in the Settings menu to switch to Focus Mode, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memos, Magnifier, Shortcuts, or an Accessibility feature.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max significantly shifts by replacing the proprietary Lightning charging port with the universal USB-C. This transition aligns with European Union regulations aimed at reducing electronic waste and benefiting consumers with incredible charging speeds and faster data transfers. While many of Apple's competitors have embraced USB-C in their devices for years, the iPhone's adoption of this standard ensures compatibility with a wide range of accessories and peripherals.
At the heart of the iPhone 15 Pro Max lies the A17 Pro chip, representing a significant leap in performance. Powered by one of the world's first 3nm processors, this chip is designed for speed, efficiency, and advanced capabilities. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or simply seeking a device that easily handles tasks, the A17 Pro chip ensures a seamless and responsive user experience.
Apple has revamped the iPhone 15 Pro Max's design, introducing brushed titanium and a matte finish that offers a more tactile feel. This new finish adds a touch of luxury and enhances grip, reducing the chances of accidental slips. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is also notably lighter, weighing 8% less than its predecessor.
Photography enthusiasts have reason to rejoice with the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 5x zoom camera. Offering the equivalent of a 120mm focal length on a DSLR or mirrorless camera, this camera system takes smartphone photography to new heights. Despite its powerful capabilities, Apple has managed to keep the camera compact, fitting it into a circle the size of several small coins.
