Anthropic has updated Claude Code to prevent users from recreating specific existing video games, responding to growing concerns over AI-generated game copies.

Claude's new instructions tell the AI not to reproduce an existing game, even when users change its name or describe the project as original.

Anthropic's updated restriction specifically targets Claude Code running on Opus 5.5, while original game development and creative projects remain supported.

Addy Osmani, a member of Anthropic's technical staff, confirmed that the company introduced new instructions to prevent Claude from helping users infringe intellectual property rights.

Developers have raised concerns about AI tools copying existing games, including projects that reproduce gameplay, visual elements and other distinctive features.

AI-assisted recreations of popular titles such as Halo: Combat Evolved, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto V have drawn attention to the growing issue.

Claude can still help users develop original video games, create projects within existing genres and build games using their own designs and assets.

Independent game developers are concerned that AI-generated copies could affect their businesses, particularly when upcoming games and public demos become accessible to others.

Anthropic says it will continue refining Claude's restrictions to balance copyright protection with creative freedom.
